In a pivotal preliminary round game at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Germany and Latvia face off on Saturday. This Group C matchup could shape the race for advancement. The Germans have looked composed early in the tournament, while Latvia is searching for its first win after a tough opening game. Germany enters this game as the favorite. Will they get to 2-0, or will Latvia take them down? Keep reading to get my Germany vs Latvia prediction below.
Pick: Germany -1.5 ATS PRO
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Germany enters this game with momentum after a 3-1 win in its tournament opener against Denmark, getting goals from Leon Draisaitl and a two-goal effort by Tim Stützle in that victory. The Germans have leveraged their high-end offensive talent to gain early control in Group C, and they’ll aim to build on that success. Latvia suffered a 5-1 defeat to the United States in its opening game, mustering only limited offensive pressure and being outshot significantly. That result exposed some defensive vulnerabilities that Germany will look to exploit again.
Goaltending will be pivotal in this game, and Germany boasts a strong presence with Philipp Grubauer between the pipes. Grubauer was tested against Denmark but remained composed, allowing just one goal while stopping numerous high-danger chances. His poise and experience could make him a significant factor, especially if Latvia struggles to generate consistent scoring opportunities. Latvia’s goaltending was torn up by Team USA in its opener and will try to play better in this contest.
On offense, Germany is driven by NHL-caliber talent that includes Leon Draisaitl and Tim Stützle, both of whom have already found the back of the net in this tournament. Their chemistry and ability to create scoring opportunities make them central to Germany’s attacking strategy. Moritz Seider anchors the defense, providing both steady coverage and transitional play. Latvia’s offensive hopes rest largely on names like Zemgus Girgensons and Teddy Blueger, who offer leadership and skill but lack the same level of supporting depth that Germany enjoys.
Score Projection: Germany 4 – Latvia 1 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Germany 72%, Latvia 28% ATS PRO
This is a huge game for Germany, as they finish group play against the United States. A loss here would make it very difficult for the Germans to get to two wins and to have a decent shot at moving on. With that in mind, I think that the Germans will outplay Latvia here, covering the puckline and giving themselves an almost sure path to the next round.
