Updated February 13, 2026
With the preliminary round of the men’s ice hockey tournament at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games nearing its conclusion, Finland and Italy square off on Saturday morning in a matchup that carries implications for quarterfinal positioning. Finland rebounded from an opening loss with a convincing victory over Sweden to remain in contention, while Italy is 0-2 and will try to get into the win column. Before this matchup begins in Italy, you will find my Finland vs Italy prediction right here.
Pick: Italy +4.5 ATS PRO
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Recent form
Finland’s journey in Group B has seen them split their first two games. After a surprising 4-1 setback to Slovakia in its opener, Finland responded with authority in a 4-1 victory over Sweden, featuring balanced scoring from across the lineup and strong goaltending. Italy enters this matchup without a win, falling 5-2 to Sweden and losing 3-2 to Slovakia. However, Italy’s scoring in both games indicates offensive ability despite being sizable underdogs against top competition.
Goaltending
Finland is playing for the second day in a row here after beating up on Sweden on Friday. That could have a huge impact on their goaltending decisions. Italy’s goaltending group has faced a heavy workload, with goaltender Damian Clara making a high volume of saves in recent games but still yielding multiple goals, suggesting vulnerability when under sustained pressure.
Key skaters
Finland boasts a roster filled with NHL-caliber talents, including Mikael Granlund, Mikko Rantanen, Anton Lundell, and Sebastian Aho. Their ability to generate offense in waves will be a critical edge. Finland’s scoring depth was on display against Sweden, with contributions from several forwards. Italy’s top production has come from veteran Dustin Gazley and Matthew Bradley, but the Azzurri lack the high-end firepower and depth Finland brings to this matchup.
Score Projection: Finland 6 – Italy 2 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Finland 92%, Italy 8% ATS PRO
In a contest that pits a talented and deep Finnish squad against a spirited Italian side playing at home, the disparity in recent success and roster strength points clearly to Finland in terms of who will win this game. While Italy’s effort has been commendable, I think that Finland gets the win here to improve to 2-1 in group play. However, I am going to take the 4.5 goals with Italy, as they have avoided being completely shut down on the attack against tough competition.
