The Olympic men’s hockey quarterfinal between Germany and Slovakia on Wednesday promises to be an interesting elimination round contest at the Milano Santagiulia Arena. Germany used a resounding 5-1 victory over France to book its spot in the quarterfinals, while Slovakia earned a direct quarterfinal berth by topping Group B with consistent results in group play. Before this quarterfinal matchup begins on the Olympic ice, continue reading to get my Germany vs Slovakia prediction.
Pick: Slovakia Moneyline ATS PRO
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Germany enters this quarterfinal off a strong performance against France, scoring five goals and controlling much of the play in a 5-1 win. Captain Leon Draisaitl was a major contributor, scoring and setting up a goal, with Tim Stutzle adding multiple assists in the contest. This offensive display followed earlier mixed tournament results, including a loss to the United States, but the Germans have clearly found a rhythm as they go into the quarterfinal phase.
Slovakia earned a bye into this round by winning Group B. The Slovaks posted wins over Finland and Italy and finished top on goal differential despite a defeat to Sweden. This direct advancement afforded Slovakia extra rest and preparation time, which could give them a tangible advantage over Germany’s shorter turnaround after the qualification round game. Their offensive unit has shown the ability to score consistently throughout preliminary play, with multiple players contributing goals in the group phase.
Goaltending is a pivotal factor in elimination games and this is no exception. Germany’s Philipp Grubauer has received praise for his play and adaptation to minor rink adjustments mid-tournament. While not flawless by any means, Grubauer’s experience has helped stabilize the German defense. Slovakia does not have NHL experience in goal, but that has not stopped them from performing well enough to this point in the tournament.
Leon Draisaitl stands as Germany’s premier offensive threat and one of the most dangerous scorers in the entire tournament. His ability to generate chances and involve linemates such as Tim Stutzle and JJ Peterka makes the German top group dangerous. On the Slovak side, Juraj Slafkovsky has been a crucial producer and driving force for his team’s scoring output. Young talents like Simon Nemec have also played critical roles for Slovakia, ensuring that the offense doesn’t rely on a single scorer.
Score Projection: Germany 2 – Slovakia 3 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Germany 50%, Slovakia 50% ATS PRO
This quarterfinal is going to be a tight contest in which Germany’s offensive firepower will try to overcome a rest disadvantage going into this game. I'll take Slovakia to get the win here, as they are the more rested team and should be able to take advantage of that as they will punch their ticket to the semifinals of the men's hockey tournament.
