Florida Panthers vs. Carolina Hurricanes Preview Opening Night: Eyeing the Over

The prediction markets see Carolina as a slight favorite on Opening Night, with Florida trading just below the 50¢ mark.
The more interesting market for me is the total. Over 6.5 goals is also trading below 50¢, which feels a little low for a matchup featuring a much healthier Florida offense, plenty of high-end scoring talent and uncertainty in both creases.
The risk with this trade, is of course the Hurricanes and their defensive structure which deserves respect, but this is regular-season hockey rather than a late-round playoff game. If the matchup becomes more open and chaotic, Florida has the personnel to take advantage.
As long as Over 6.5 remains available below 50¢, that is the trade I prefer.
Carolina's ability to control games was one of its biggest strengths during last season's Stanley Cup run, but I don't necessarily expect Opening Night to look like playoff hockey.
Regular-season games tend to offer more room for mistakes, aggressive offense and momentum swings. That could be particularly important against a Florida team that looks considerably more dangerous than the one that finished 40-38-4 last season.
Aleksander Barkov is back after missing the entire regular season, while Brady Tkachuk joins Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett and Carter Verhaeghe in a loaded top six. Florida should have significantly more finishing talent available from the opening puck drop.
Carolina can contribute plenty to the scoring environment as well. The Hurricanes averaged 3.55 goals per game last season and remain one of the NHL's strongest offensive teams even without Seth Jarvis.
The crease is another reason I prefer the Over rather than trying to predict which team wins.
Brandon Bussi had an excellent 31-6-2 record last season, but his .895 save percentage was much less convincing and he is still relatively inexperienced at the NHL level.
Jacob Markstrom is the opposite. He has plenty of experience, but arrives in Florida after recording an .883 save percentage with New Jersey last season.
Neither projected starter makes me eager to trade on a low-scoring game.
Carolina's defensive structure can certainly protect Bussi, but Florida now has enough offensive talent to punish mistakes. Markstrom, meanwhile, still needs to show that last season was an outlier rather than the beginning of a decline.
Over 6.5 Yes is trading around 47¢ on Kalshi, with Polymarket in a similar range.
I would put the probability of 7 or more goals closer to 51% to 52%, which makes anything below 50¢ interesting.
The attraction isn't that I expect Carolina's defensive structure to suddenly disappear. It is that the market may be putting too much weight on the controlled version of Carolina we saw deep in the postseason and not enough on the uncertainty surrounding the two goalies and Florida's improved offense.
A 4-3 game is very realistic here, and an early goal could quickly push the game toward the more open style that suits Florida's forwards.
Platform: Kalshi
Current Price: Around 47¢
Estimated Fair Price: 51¢ to 52¢
Preferred Entry: Below 50¢
Confidence: 3.5 out of 5
The Panthers should be considerably more dangerous offensively than their 2025–26 numbers suggest, while Carolina remains capable of generating plenty of offense on its own.
Add two projected starters with legitimate questions surrounding them, and I prefer trading on a more open Opening Night rather than assuming Carolina immediately turns the game into another postseason-style grind.
Carolina is capable of completely controlling possession and limiting Florida's opportunities. If the Hurricanes spend most of the night in the offensive zone and Bussi handles the chances that do get through, this could still become the type of 3-2 game Carolina played so effectively last spring.
Florida's improved lineup also does not guarantee immediate chemistry. Barkov's return and Brady Tkachuk's arrival raise the offensive ceiling, but it may take time for the new combinations to settle.
Projected Score: Florida 4 – Carolina 3
Preferred Trade: Over 6.5 Yes
Current Price: Around 47¢
Preferred Entry: Below 50¢
Confidence: 3.5 out of 5
Carolina remains the more structured team, but this is Opening Night rather than a late-round playoff game. With a healthier and more dangerous Florida offense, uncertainty in both creases and a prediction-market price below 50¢, Over 6.5 Yes is the trade that stands out.
