Key Storylines
Recent Form
- Finland stumbled out of the gate with a 4-1 loss to Slovakia, despite a 40-25 shot advantage, a result that raised questions about their finishing and goaltending. Slovakia’s Milos Kelemen scored twice to upset the defending champ, and Finland managed only one goal despite sustained pressure. Juuse Saros stopped 21 of 24 shots in that game.
- Sweden opened with a 5-2 win over Italy, though the Swedes didn’t truly pull away until later in the game. Sweden outshot Italy by an overwhelming margin and leaned on scoring from players like Rasmus Dahlin and Mika Zibanejad to build its lead.
- The recent history between these teams has tilted slightly toward Sweden, with multiple wins in previous meetings, including their December encounter. Finland’s overtime win at the Four Nations Face-Off last year serves as a reminder that these games can be close.
Goaltending
- Finland’s Saros has a solid NHL pedigree but posted an .875 save rate in the opener, a number Finland would like to see improve quickly against Sweden’s attack.
- Sweden appears likely to trust Filip Gustavsson in goal, though coach Sam Hallam has signaled that he could be flexible with the goalies for his team. Gustavsson allowed two goals on 22 shots against Italy, a stat line that’s solid but not spectacular against arguably the weakest team in this tournament.
Key Skaters
- Mikko Rantanen leads Finland offensively with 69 NHL points this season, yet he logged limited time in the opener, suggesting Finland may need to increase his role to challenge Sweden’s depth.
- Sweden’s roster is loaded on the blue line with Victor Hedman, Rasmus Dahlin, and Erik Karlsson providing size, skill, and offense. Forward depth also includes Elias Pettersson and Zibanejad, making the Tre Kronor balanced at both ends of the ice.

Final Thoughts
Sweden enters this showdown with more consistent play so far in the preliminary round, deeper defensive and offensive depth, and more recent success against Finland. While Finland’s talent level demands respect and the Leijonat can certainly push back, the Tre Kronor’s roster composition and stronger overall form make Sweden the wiser selection on the puck line. I'll lay the 1.5 goals with Sweden, who should move closer to advancing in the tournament.
