The 2026 Winter Olympics men’s ice hockey tournament opens on Wednesday with a Group B clash between Finland and Slovakia at the Milano Santagiulia Arena. Both nations enter with strong Olympic history, with both teams medaling in 2022. Finland captured its first Olympic gold medal in that tournament and will try to get off to a good start here. Before the puck drops in Italy, continue reading to get my Finland vs Slovakia prediction on the ice.
Pick: Finland -1.5 ATS PRO
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Finland plans to start Juuse Saros, who seeks to rebound from a challenging NHL season and use the Olympic stage to regain his form. His presence stabilizes Finland’s in net and should give them confidence in their title defense. Slovakia’s projected starter, Adam Gajan, has been decent in league play but lacks the extensive resume of Saros, making this a tough situation for him.
Finland’s forward units feature high-end playmaking and scoring threats, giving them an edge in generating offense. Slovakia’s young scorers can erupt on any given shift, but they will need strong support from depth forwards and defensemen to contend with Finland’s balanced lines. Aho will be particularly interesting as a facilitator, similar to what we've seen from him with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Score Projection: Finland 4 – Slovakia 2 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Finland 75%, Slovakia 25% ATS PRO
This Olympic opener should be defined by Finland’s depth, goaltending presence, and championship experience, which give them a clear edge. I'm going to lay the puckline with Finland as a favorite in this contest. They have more attacking quality and a goaltender who is more experienced in high-pressure situations as a regular on the ice in the NHL. Look for the defending champs to get their campaign off to a good start in Italy.
