The Detroit Red Wings will head to the West Coast to face the San Jose Sharks on Sunday. Detroit (8-4-0) enters with off to a strong start to the season. San Jose (4-6-2) has won two games in a row and will try to extend that winning streak on home ice here. Before the puck drops in San Jose on Sunday, continue reading to get my Red Wings vs Sharks prediction.
Detroit comes in with a strong 8-4-0 record. The Red Wings average 3.33 goals per game and have allowed 3.25 goals on average, ranking strongly in most offensive categories. Their power play sits at a 25.0% conversion rate and their penalty kill is successful at an 86.1% clip this season.
San Jose has struggled overall at 4-6-2 but they have won two games in a row. Offensively, the Sharks are decent and average 3.33 goals per game. But they have allowed 4.17 goals per game, which is among the worst averages in the league. The Sharks are also playing for the second straight night here after they got an overtime win over the Colorado Avalanche.
Detroit's likely starter is John Gibson. He has a 4-3-0 record with a goals-against average of 3.32 and a save percentage of .875 this season. San Jose's projected goalie for this game is Alex Nedeljkovic. He is 2-2-1 with a 3.60 GAA and .887 save percentage this season. His career numbers against Detroit are slightly better (2.84 GAA, .902 save percentage), but Nedeljkovic will need help from his defense to play well tonight.
Detroit’s offense is led by Dylan Larkin (8 goals, 9 assists) and Alex DeBrincat (4 goals, 10 assists) through the first 12 games. San Jose’s offense is anchored by rookie Macklin Celebrini (7 goals, 11 assists, 18 points) and William Eklund (5 goals, 6 assists, 11 points) in 12 games. Their youth movement has promise but consistency is an issue for their developing nucleus.
Player | Stat | Prop |
|---|---|---|
Dylan Larkin | Points | Over 1.5 |
Alex DeBrincat | Goals | Over 0.5 |
Macklin Celebrini | Points | Over 1.5 |
Score Projection: Detroit Red Wings 4 – San Jose Sharks 2
Win Probability: Detroit Red Wings 62%, San Jose Sharks 38%
The Sharks were impressive in their overtime win over the Avalanche last night. But asking them to repeat that performance just one night later is a big ask. I think that the Red Wings will take advantage of the tired legs on San Jose's side of this matchup and I will lay the puckline with the Red Wings in this inter-conference matchup on the ice.
