Quarterback injuries ruined the season of the San Francisco 49ers last year, as they fell in the NFC Championship Game to the Philadelphia Eagles. In that game, Josh Johnson had to take the field, as Brock Purdy suffered an injury early on. Now, Purdy is back on the field and the Niners have championship expectations.
In this 49ers vs Steelers game, pass protection is going to be a key for the Niners. While San Francisco looks better than Pittsburgh in just about every area, the Steelers will have their pass rush back to just about full power at the start of this year. That could mean a tough time protecting Purdy and giving him the time he needs to throw the ball effectively.

The Pittsburgh Steelers failed to make the playoffs last season, but they were an above .500 team. The Steelers have become a trendy pick to cover the spread in Week 1 against the 49ers. But the offensive output of the Steelers will determine whether or not they are able to do that, in what could be a defensive struggle.
For the Steelers this season, and in this game, efficiency in the running game will be key to Pittsburgh’s success. They give the ball to Najee Harris a lot, but he has not generated chunks of yardage nearly enough for the Steelers to have a truly successful running game. That will be a tough ask again when facing the 49ers defense in Week 1, but it isn’t completely impossible either.
