Pittsburgh Steelers Betting Preview
While the Steelers were not one of the best teams in the NFL last season, they were good enough to get to the postseason. However, they fell short in the Wild Card round of the playoffs and have decided to make a change at the quarterback position that they hope will propel them into a better position than they were in last year. Here, we present our 2024 Pittsburgh Steelers season preview and predict whether they will go over or under their season win total.

Offseason Transactions
Key Additions: Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Van Jefferson, Scott Miller, Cordarrelle Patterson, Quez Watkins, Patrick Queen, Donte Jackson, Cameron Sutton
Key Departures: Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, Mitchell Trubisky, Diontae Johnson, Allen Robinson, Markus Golden, Kwon Alexander, Patrick Peterson, Chandon Sullivan, Levi Wallace, Keanu Neal
The headline for the Steelers in the offseason was all of the moves they made at the quarterback position. They ditched the trio they had in their quarterback room last season and replaced them with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. It looks like Wilson will start the season under center for Pittsburgh, but we could see both of these quarterbacks in some capacity, as the Steelers will likely look to utilize the athleticism of Fields in creative ways.
Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive Stats
2023 (Rank) | 2022 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play | 5.0 (T-22nd) | 4.9 (T-27th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt | 4.1 (T-16th) | 4.1 (T-25th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt | 6.7 (T-23rd) | 6.4 (T-27th) |
Points Per Game | 17.9 (T-27th) | 18.1 (T-26th) |
Turnovers | 16 (T-2nd) | 19 (T-5th) |
Pittsburgh was dreadful offensively last season, thanks largely to their unfortunate quarterback situation. This year, the Steelers should turn the ball over more than they did last year with the combination of Wilson and Fields leading them. But they should also be more explosive, which could mean a completely different series of outcomes for Pittsburgh in a division that is loaded with good defense everywhere else.
Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive Stats
2023 (Rank) | 2022 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play Allowed | 5.4 (T-19th) | 5.5 (T-20th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt Allowed | 4.4 (T-22nd) | 4.2 (T-9th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed | 6.7 (T-18th) | 7.0 (T-25th) |
Points Per Game Allowed | 19.1 (T-6th) | 20.4 (T-10th) |
Takeaways | 27 (T-8th) | 23 (T-14th) |
Pittsburgh’s defense was a strength for them last season, as is to be expected of any defense led by the great TJ Watt. The Steelers play in a division that is brutal for most defenses to deal with, as they have to face the great rushing attack of the Browns along with Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow. But that hasn’t been a problem for the Steelers in the past and it is not expected to be a problem this year either.
Positives & Negatives
Change is by far the biggest positive for the Steelers going into the 2024 NFL season. They were going nowhere with the quarterbacks they had on their roster and are now at least in a position to try something new on that side of the ball. That along with a very good defense will make the Steelers an interesting team in futures betting markets throughout the year.
On the negative side, the running game for the Steelers just isn’t explosive enough to be great. Najee Harris barely averages four yards per carry on high volume, which could change as the Pittsburgh offense becomes more pass-oriented with its new quarterbacks. Still, we need to see this group move the ball more consistently on the ground before we get excited.
2024 Pittsburgh Steelers Win Total Prediction: Under 8.5 Wins
Mike Tomlin doesn’t have seasons that finish below the .500 mark, but we are going to tempt fate and bet on that to happen in 2024. The Steelers are not a sure bet to improve on offense with Russell Wilson under center, as the Broncos were terrible with him at the helm over the last couple of seasons. We expect this team to be right around seven or eight wins when all is said and done, so we will take the under for the Steelers at 8.5 wins.
