Pittsburgh Steelers Betting Preview
While the Steelers were not one of the best teams in the NFL last season, they were respectable with a rookie quarterback at the helm. This season, they will expect a leap forward from Kenny Pickett and their offense, while the Steelers hope that their trademark defense and grit can help them to find a way into the playoffs. Here, we present our 2023 Pittsburgh Steelers season preview and look at whether they will go over or under their season win total.

Offseason Transactions
Key Additions: Patrick Peterson, Joey Porter Jr.
Key Departures: Cam Sutton, Myles Jack
It was not an overly eventful offseason in Pittsburgh, as they brought in a couple of new pieces for their secondary, while losing a couple of defensive pieces in the process. The addition of Joey Porter Jr. is of particular interest, given that Joey Porter Sr. had such a memorable career of his own in Pittsburgh. But this year’s additions and subtractions for the Steelers should not make or break this team.
Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive Stats
2022 (Rank) | 2021 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play | 4.9 (T-27th) | 4.8 (T-28th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt | 4.1 (T-25th) | 3.8 (28th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt | 6.4 (T-27th) | 6.0 (T-30th) |
Points Per Game | 18.1 (T-26th) | 20.2 (21st) |
Turnovers | 19 (T-5th) | 20 (T-10th) |
Pittsburgh’s offense was pretty putrid for most of the 2022 season, which is not entirely uncommon for an offense relying on a rookie quarterback. Kenny Pickett did a nice job of limiting his interceptions last season, keeping them in single digits. But the Steelers were woefully inefficient running the football, and they will need to change that if they are going to give Pickett the help that he needs to turn a corner in his second season.
Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive Stats
2022 (Rank) | 2021 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play Allowed | 5.5 (T-20th) | 5.6 (T-20th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt Allowed | 4.2 (T-9th) | 5.0 (32nd) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed | 7.0 (T-25th) | 6.7 (T-16th) |
Points Per Game Allowed | 20.4 (T-10th) | 24.4 (22nd) |
Takeaways | 23 (T-14th) | 22 (T-14th) |
Defensively, the Steelers were strong for the most part last year, though their pass defense left plenty to be desired. Pittsburgh will hope that they addressed their pass defense by bringing Peterson and Porter into the fold. They will also have TJ Watt back after he missed a good chunk of last season due to injury, which should help their pass defense by giving quarterbacks less time to throw the ball against them.
Positives & Negatives
There is a lot of hope surrounding the Steelers this season, which should be the biggest positive for this franchise heading into 2023. Kenny Pickett could take a huge step forward this year, while the Steelers appear to have made some meaningful improvements to their defense against the pass. After being caught in limbo at the end of the Ben Roethlisberger era and having low expectations last year, that hope is a massive positive for a team that appears to be moving in the right direction.
On the negative side for the Steelers, their running game is still a big question despite having Najee Harris in their backfield. Pittsburgh ran the ball a ton last season, but was not getting chunk yardage when doing so. That needs to change if this team wants to become a contender in the AFC.
2023 Pittsburgh Steelers Win Total Prediction: Under 8.5 Wins
This season’s Steelers still feel like they are a year away from really moving up the ranks in the AFC North. A young offensive nucleus and the lack of a guarantee that their new corners will play well right away have this team looking like a seven or eight-win team heading into this year. Expect the Steelers to come close, but to ultimately go under their season win total.
