New England and Seattle open the 2026 NFL season Wednesday night at Lumen Field in a rematch of Super Bowl LX. Seattle won that meeting 29-13 in February and finished last season 14-3 before its championship run. New England also went 14-3 and returns with Drake Maye after an exceptional second season, but the Patriots have spent the offseason trying to close the gap between these teams that Seattle exposed in the title game.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Seattle’s defensive advantage, home-field advantage, and continuity are worth more than the current spread price, while New England enters Week 1 with health questions at running back and along its defensive front.”
Seattle Favored By 3 and a Hook
Polymarket currently prices Seattle -3.5 at about 48¢, with New England +3.5 near 53¢. The Seahawks are much stronger in the straight-up market at roughly 63¢, which shows traders clearly expect Seattle to win but are far less certain about a margin of four points or more. The total is sitting around 44.5, with the under near 52¢.
Our Projections Favor Seattle
My projection gives Seattle a 52% chance of covering -3.5, creating a 4% edge over the 48% implied probability. The value comes from a matchup that still favors Seattle in the trenches. New England improved its offensive personnel, yet its biggest problem in the Super Bowl was keeping Maye clean. Seattle sacked him six times in that game, and asking the Patriots to completely solve that issue in their first regular-season game with a reshuffled line is too much to ask in my eyes.

Maye enters 2026 after completing 72% of his passes for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions last season while posting a 113.5 passer rating. Those numbers established him as one of the league’s most efficient quarterbacks. New England also added A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, giving Maye a deeper receiving group than he had during the Super Bowl run.
Seattle remains a difficult opening assignment for the Patriots. The Seahawks allowed 17.2 points per game in 2025 and finished first in defensive DVOA. From Week 12 through Week 18, they surrendered just 14.1 points per game, then held postseason opponents to 15.3 per game. Their pressure package overwhelmed New England in February, and Mike Macdonald can again test the Patriots’ protection with movement before the snap and pressure from several positions.
Seattle does have an important adjustment to make that will factor into our Patriots vs Seahawks predictions. Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III left for Kansas City, while new offensive coordinator Brian Fleury takes over the offense. Sam Darnold remains the quarterback after throwing for 4,048 yards with 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season. His job should again revolve around avoiding negative plays and giving Seattle’s defense favorable field position.
The Patriots have reasons to believe they can make this game tighter than the Super Bowl. Their defense played well through much of last postseason, and Christian Gonzalez gives them an elite coverage option to chase Jaxson Smith-Njigba. Christian Barmore’s knee issue is worth watching, however, and running back TreVeyon Henderson has also missed practice because of an ankle injury. Henderson had not practiced since August 24 as of the latest reports, reducing New England’s explosive options out of the backfield.
The key question is whether New England can create enough explosive passing plays without exposing Maye to the same pressure that changed the Super Bowl. Seattle does not need another 16-point victory to cover the number. It just needs a four-point win.
New England is better equipped offensively than it was in February, which keeps our model from giving Seattle a larger edge. Still, the combination of Seattle’s defense, Lumen Field, and a proven ability to disrupt this Patriots offense makes the Seahawks -3.5 attractive at 48¢. My projected score is Seattle 24, New England 19.
