New England Patriots vs Buffalo Bills Prediction, Preview & Analysis - 10/4/2026

Updated October 2, 2026

New England enters Sunday with far less room for error than Buffalo. The Patriots are 1-2 after a 35-6 loss at Jacksonville, while the Bills are 3-0 after beating the Chargers 24-16. Buffalo has scored 33.7 points per game through three weeks, best in the league, while New England has managed 12.0. The Patriots have defended well overall, but their offense has repeatedly put that defense in poor situations, which needs to change if New England is going to win here.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“New England’s defensive numbers are solid, but Buffalo has the clearer path to scoring through its run game, quarterback play, and New England’s turnover problems.”
Market Snapshot
Polymarket currently prices Buffalo at 75¢ to win the game outright and New England at 26¢. On the spread market, Bills -6.5 is priced at 53¢, while Patriots +6.5 is 48¢. The total sits at 48.5, with the over at 52¢ and the under at 49¢.
Matchup Favors Buffalo
My projection gives Buffalo a 57% chance to cover at -6.5, creating a 4% edge over the current 53% implied probability. The attraction is less about Buffalo being unbeaten and more about the matchup. New England has a -5 turnover differential and has scored only three touchdowns through three games. Buffalo has its own ball-security concerns, including five turnovers against Los Angeles last week, but the Bills still found enough offense to win that game by 8.

Buffalo is 3-0 and alone atop the AFC East futures market, while New England is 1-2 and tied behind the Bills. That gives this game immediate divisional importance. A Buffalo win would create significant early separation, while a Patriots victory would pull New England back into the race and repeat last season’s road success in Buffalo. New England won 23-20 in Buffalo last season before the Bills took the return meeting 35-31.
Buffalo is averaging 155.0 rushing yards per game, fourth in the NFL, and James Cook has 346 yards on 58 carries for 6.0 yards per attempt. He ran for 154 yards against the Chargers last week. New England is allowing 108.3 rushing yards per game, so the Patriots have been respectable against the run without being dominant.
If Buffalo stays efficient on early downs, Josh Allen will avoid obvious passing situations against a New England defense allowing only 170.0 passing yards per game, second in the league. Allen has thrown for 786 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions, giving Buffalo far more stability at quarterback so far.
Maye has thrown for 585 yards with one touchdown and six interceptions through three games. His latest outing produced 199 passing yards, two interceptions and a lost fumble in the 35-6 loss to Jacksonville. He has also taken nine sacks this season.
Buffalo has nine sacks through three games, which creates a difficult setup for a Patriots offense that cannot afford more negative plays. There is an opening for Maye because Buffalo is allowing 254.3 passing yards per game, but taking advantage of that weakness requires cleaner decisions and better protection than New England has shown.
The latest available injury report adds another concern for New England. Christian Barmore, Christian Gonzalez and Morgan Moses did not practice Thursday, while Maye was a full participant despite a right shoulder issue. For Buffalo, Christian Benford did not practice, while Keon Coleman and DJ Moore were limited. Those situations remain worth tracking before final game designations are released.
New England’s defense is good enough to keep the score within reach for stretches, and Buffalo’s turnover differential is also negative at -2. The larger problem for the Patriots is sustaining offense. Buffalo averages 401.7 total yards per game compared with New England’s 307.0, and the Bills have scored 13 touchdowns to the Patriots’ three.
That gap puts pressure on Maye to play a much cleaner game than he has through three weeks. Buffalo does not need a perfect offensive performance to cover this number. If the Bills protect the ball reasonably well and Cook keeps them ahead of the chains, Buffalo should create enough possessions and scoring opportunities to separate in the second half. My prediction is Bills -6.5, with Buffalo projected to win by about 10 points.
