Detroit Lions Picks, Predictions & Betting News
Offseason Transactions
Key Additions: Kevin Zeitler, Dan Skipper, Marcus Davenport, DJ Reader, Carlton Davis
Key Departures: Teddy Bridgewater, Josh Reynolds, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Romeo Okwara, Tyson Alualu, Cameron Sutton, CJ Gardner-Johnson, Will Harris, Tracy Walker III
On the whole, the Lions lost more personnel than they brought in during the offseason before the 2024 season. But in terms of actual impact talent, the Lions are largely in the same spot they were heading into last season. Losing CJ Gardner-Johnson might be the most impactful loss of the offseason for the Lions, as he went back to the Philadelphia Eagles. But other than that, there is nothing here that suggests that they should panic about the offseason at all.
Detroit Lions Offensive Stats

Last year, the Detroit Lions had an elite offense, which many did not think was possible with Jared Goff as their quarterback. But Goff has done more than enough to make the Lions a consistent threat through the air, even if his interception count is a little higher than you’d like to see. The duo of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs will also be back for the Lions this year, which will help them to remain a threat in the running game.
Detroit Lions Defensive Stats
2023 (Rank) | 2022 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play Allowed | 5.7 (T-28th) | 6.2 (32nd) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt Allowed | 3.8 (T-3rd) | 5.2 (30th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed | 7.4 (30th) | 7.5 (31st) |
Points Per Game Allowed | 23.2 (23rd) | 25.1 (T-28th) |
Takeaways | 23 (18th) | 22 (T-17th) |
The clear weak point in the Detroit Lions is their defense, which struggled to defend the pass on a consistent basis during the 2023 season. While Detroit’s pass rush is decent enough, they lack in the secondary, which could get worse with CJ Gardner-Johnson no longer being in the equation this year. If the Lions can’t get better in pass defense this year, they could struggle once they reach the later rounds of the playoffs, even if they nearly won the NFC championship a season ago.
Positives & Negatives
It is pretty easy to draw a line in the sand regarding the positives and negatives for the Detroit Lions entering the 2024 NFL season. Their biggest positive is clearly their offense, which is able to move the ball at will, more or less. As long as Goff stays healthy and his top target Amon-Ra St. Brown continues to shred opposing defenses, the Lions will be a threat to get to the Super Bowl in an NFC that is the inferior of the two conferences in the league.
But the clear negative for the Lions heading into this season would be their defense. Detroit is not great at defending the pass, even if their run defense ranked as one of the best in the league on a per-run basis in 2023. Unless the Lions figure out how to get stops through the air more consistently, they could fall short of their goal of winning a title under Dan Campbell.
2024 Detroit Lions Win Total Prediction: Over 10.5 Wins
While the defense of the Lions is a major red flag, we still expect Detroit to have a massive season in 2024. They should once again be among the best teams in the league at moving the ball through the air and putting points on the board. We will take the over on the season win total for the Lions as we project them to tally somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 wins this year, the same number they had last year.
