Denver Broncos Picks, Predictions & Betting News
Offseason Transactions
Key Additions: Zach Wilson, Josh Reynolds, John Franklin-Myers, Cody Barton, Levi Wallace, Bo Nix, Brandon Jones
Key Departures: Russell Wilson, Jerry Jeudy, Lloyd Cushenberry, Jonathan Harris, Mike Purcell, Josey Jewell, Fabian Moreau, Justin Simmons
The Broncos moved on from Russell Wilson in the offseason, but the options they acquired to replace him are not great. They traded for Zach Wilson, whose previous professional experience featured a rough go of things with the New York Jets. They also drafted Bo Nix, which could end up being a significant reach if Nix doesn’t go on to have a very good pro career.
Denver Broncos Offensive Stats
2023 (Rank) | 2022 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play | 5.0 (T-22nd) | 5.1 (T-23rd) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt | 4.0 (T-21st) | 4.4 (T-16th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt | 7.0 (T-17th) | 7.0 (17th) |
Points Per Game | 21.0 (19th) | 16.9 (32nd) |
Turnovers | 22 (T-17th) | 24 (26th) |
On offense, the Denver Broncos were mediocre, which was a huge letdown given that they expect the Russell Wilson era to yield a championship. Denver was not all that explosive through the air and an ugly late-season situation played out to where Wilson was shut down late in the year. This season, things could be even worse offensively with a combination of Jarrett Stidham, Bo Nix, and Zach Wilson as their quarterback room.
Denver Broncos Defensive Stats
2023 (Rank) | 2022 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play Allowed | 5.8 (30th) | 5.0 (T-4th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt Allowed | 5.0 (32nd) | 4.3 (T-11th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed | 6.9 (T-25th) | 5.9 (T-4th) |
Points Per Game Allowed | 24.3 (27th) | 21.1 (T-13th) |
Takeaways | 26 (T-12th) | 23 (T-14th) |
The real surprise for the Broncos last season was just how bad they were on defense. The Broncos were in the bottom-10 in most key defensive categories and they were just outside of the bottom-five in points allowed. With the potential for the Broncos offense to get worse and spend less time on the field, the defense of the Broncos could be asked to do even more, which could mean an even harder time for them.
Positives & Negatives
The biggest positive for the Broncos is the fact that they have at least moved on from Russell Wilson, who was clearly not taking their organization where they wanted to go. While there could be some struggles on offense for the Broncos this year, the fact that they are attempting to take things in a new direction is better than the team spinning its wheels in the futility they found themselves in.
With that said, the number-one negative for the Broncos is just how bleak their quarterback situation is going to be. Stidham, Wilson, and Nix are not starting quarterbacks in this league, even if one of them has to be with the current roster construction of the Broncos. This team is not going to do a whole lot of scoring and their season could go South in a hurry because of that.
2024 Denver Broncos Win Total Prediction: Under 5.5 Wins
We can’t recommend anything other than the under for the Broncos in the season win total market this year. They are just so bad offensively that even a huge improvement on defense might not be enough for them to be a .500 club. Look for the Broncos to win around four or five games as they should finish in last place in the AFC West by a decent margin.
