The Cincinnati Bengals enter the 2023 NFL season with high expectations, having reached the AFC Championship Game or better in two straight seasons. Here, they are slight favorites against their in-state rivals in the Cleveland Browns. But an injury to Joe Burrow could make this Bengals vs Browns game harder than usual for the defending AFC North champions.
With Burrow nursing his calf injury, pass protection will be incredibly important for the Bengals in this matchup, which is already the case against a team with Myles Garrett leading its pass rush. That and run defense will determine how Week 1 goes for the Bengals.
Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns waited out Deshaun Watson’s suspension last year, and got some mediocre quarterback play from him when he was finally able to take the field. Now, Watson is set for his first full season of starting quarterback play in several years, and the Browns will hope that turns into a strong season, starting with a win over the Bengals.
In this game, the Browns will need its running game to be dominant for a number of reasons. That would help keep the ball away from Burrow and the Bengals offense, and make life much easier on Watson, both of which would be huge for Cleveland’s chances of winning. And given how competitive the AFC South is going to be this year, taking advantage of home games is a must for Cleveland and the rest of the division.
