Carolina and Atlanta enter Sunday at 0-1, but their opening losses looked very different. The Panthers showed signs of life on offense in a 59-37 loss to Chicago, while the Falcons stayed close at Pittsburgh behind their defense and Bijan Robinson before falling 20-13. With every NFC South team starting 0-1, this is an early division game that could result in one of these teams being alone at the top of the division by the end of Week 2.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Carolina’s offensive showing was impressive, but the market is giving too much respect to a defense that allowed 552 yards and 291 rushing yards. Atlanta can build its offense around Robinson and shorten the game, while its defense just held Pittsburgh to 264 total yards.”
Carolina's Offense Makes Them Favorites
Polymarket currently prices Carolina at 54¢ and Atlanta at 47¢ on the moneyline. Carolina is also priced at 51¢ to cover -1.5, while the total sits at 44.5. Carolina is a slight favorite after Bryce Young threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns in the opener.
Our Model Prefers the Falcons
My number moves the other way. Atlanta’s quarterback situation is unsettled, and Cooper Rush appears likely to start after throwing for 143 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions against Pittsburgh. Even so, this matchup gives the Falcons a cleaner offensive path than they had in Week 1. Robinson produced 173 yards from scrimmage against Pittsburgh, and Carolina just allowed Chicago to run for 291 yards. Atlanta does not need elite quarterback play if Robinson has success on early downs and keeps Rush out of obvious passing situations.

Every NFC South team lost in Week 1, leaving the division level at 0-1 across the board. A win here gives either Carolina or Atlanta the first division victory of the season and avoids an 0-2 start. Carolina has won the last three meetings with Atlanta, so the Falcons have a chance to stop a recent series trend at home, though that won't be easy given what we saw from Cooper Rush in Week 1.
This is the matchup that drives the prediction. Chicago averaged 7.9 yards per play against Carolina and finished with 552 total yards. The Panthers gave up 291 rushing yards, including 124 to D’Andre Swift and 100 to Kyle Monangai. Robinson now gets that front after carrying 21 times for 83 yards and catching eight passes for 90 yards in Pittsburgh.
Atlanta should be able to keep the game simple. Robinson can attack between the tackles, work outside, and become the easy outlet when pressure arrives. If Carolina cannot force Atlanta into long-yardage situations, the Falcons can control possession and limit the number of drives Young gets.
Young was one of Carolina’s bright spots in Week 1. He completed 23 of 37 passes for 361 yards and three touchdowns, with Jalen Coker catching eight passes for 138 yards and two scores. Carolina averaged 7.7 yards per play despite turning the ball over three times.
Atlanta’s defense is a different test than that of the Bears. The Falcons held Pittsburgh to 264 total yards, while Za’Darius Smith recorded two sacks. The concern for Carolina and the question for those making NFL predictions on this game is whether its explosive passing plays remain available if Atlanta creates pressure without sending extra rushers.
Atlanta still has questions at quarterback. Tua Tagovailoa missed Week 1 with an oblique injury, Michael Penix Jr. was inactive, and Rush played through recent back spasms. Right guard Chris Lindstrom also entered concussion protocol after the opener. Carolina has its own issue with Coker, who opened the week in a precautionary boot after rolling his ankle, though he said he does not expect to miss time.
Those variables keep this from being a stronger Atlanta projection. Still, at 47¢, the Falcons are priced like the less likely winner. I make them a narrow favorite because Robinson has the best matchup on the field and Atlanta’s defense showed far more control in Week 1. My prediction is Atlanta to win a close division game.
