- Towns joins Damian Lillard as the only men in this year’s field to have won the three-point contest previously.
- Towns’ shooting motion and style lends itself well to this competition, unlike several shooters who have to shoot off the dribble.
The NBA 3-Point Contest is one of the most fun events in the NBA each year. This year promises to be no exception, as this is one of the better fields for this event in a while, even without Steph Curry involved. Here, we break down the competition for this year’s long-distance shooting competition and give some insight into why we like what we like for this event.
Why Bet Karl-Anthony Towns in the NBA 3-Point Contest?
Our pick to win this year’s three-point shooting contest is Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Towns won this event during All-Star weekend in 2022 in Cleveland, beating Trae Young and Luke Kennard in the final round. Young will be one of the competitors that Towns has to deal with again in this contest, but that should not be a problem for the Minnesota big man.
Towns is a great in-game shooter, especially for his position. But his shooting style makes him even more dangerous in an event like this one. Towns does not have a lot of motion in his shooting stroke, especially in his lower body. While many shooters in this event will take full jumps to release the ball, Towns will not, allowing him to avoid fatigue while also getting through all of his shots without worrying about time contraints.
Other Possible Winners
Along with Towns, there are two other players we think have a great chance to win this event. Those players are Damian Lillard of the Milwaukee Bucks and Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks. Lillard won this event last year, though Towns did not compete to give him a run for his money. The Bucks point guard is a lethal shooter, though he is someone who usually has to fire off the dribble, which could make a clash with Towns a tough one for him.
As for Young, he finished second to Towns in the 2022 NBA 3-Point Contest. He certainly has the range to make the three-point Starry shots that can swing this contest in his favor. But Young is another player who doesn’t usually get to shoot from a standstill, which could negatively impact his chances of winning even if he does perform well.
Outside of those three shooters, it is hard to see the other five players doing enough to win this event. Tyrese Haliburton is shooting in front of a home crowd, but his wild shooting motion could make it hard for him to score big across two rounds if needed. Jalen Brunson is not made for an event like this. And Malik Beasley, Lauri Markkanen, and Donovan Mitchell could very well end up going out in the first round.
