The NASCAR Cup Series heads to World Wide Technology Raceway on Sunday, September 13, for the Enjoy Illinois 300, the second race of the 2026 Chase. The 1.25-mile oval has quickly established a distinct identity on the Cup schedule because braking, track position, and the ability to handle 2 very different sets of corners matter as much as outright speed. Christopher Bell arrives after winning the Southern 500 at Darlington, while Denny Hamlin remains the Chase leader despite an 18th-place finish last week.
Hamlin Not the Race Favorite
Bell is an understandable +400 favorite. He finally converted a season full of near-misses into a victory at Darlington, winning the Southern 500 by 1.038 seconds after passing Kyle Larson late. Bell also has an 8.5 average finish through 4 Gateway starts and has finished inside the top 10 in 3 of them. There is little reason to question his ability to contend again.
Hamlin a Better Value
The problem for bettors is price. Bell has never finished inside the top 5 at Gateway, while Hamlin has done so 3 times. Moving from Bell at +400 to Hamlin at +425 provides a slightly larger payout while backing a driver whose historical profile at this particular oval is stronger.

Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Hamlin's 18th-place Darlington result makes his recent form appear weaker than the speed of the No. 11 Toyota actually was. He led 68 laps and ran 3rd at the end of Stage 2 before a slow pit stop cost him 13 positions, and later contact sent him into the wall. Gateway is also one of his strongest tracks statistically. Hamlin won from the pole here in 2025, has 3 top-5 finishes in 4 starts, owns a 111.2 driver rating, and has finished 2nd twice in addition to his victory. A +425 price implies only a 19.05% chance of winning. My estimate is 24%, creating enough separation to make Hamlin the preferred outright position before qualifying.”
Hamlin's Darlington finish needs some context. He was competitive for much of the Southern 500, led 68 laps, and spent extended stretches near the front. His race changed after the Stage 2 pit sequence, when difficulty securing the right-rear wheel dropped him from 3rd to 16th. Contact later in the final stage damaged the car and ultimately left him 18th. That result was much worse than his actual performance.
Gateway gives Hamlin a good opportunity to respond. He has finished 1st, 2nd and 2nd in 3 of his 4 Cup starts at the track that produced a top-5 result. His 75 laps led across those races do not tell the entire story either. Last season he started from the pole, led a race-high 75 laps and took control for good with 25 laps remaining. His ability to qualify near the front is especially valuable here because every Cup winner at Gateway has started 7th or better.
Blaney deserves serious consideration at +450. His 111.6 Gateway driver rating is actually a fraction higher than Hamlin's, and his 120 career laps led here are the most among active drivers. He also finished 4th at Darlington last weekend after starting 24th. Team Penske has won 2 of the first 4 Cup races at Gateway, giving Blaney a legitimate path to victory.
Logano at +700 is another interesting alternative because his Gateway record is almost impossible to dismiss. He won the inaugural Cup race in 2022 and has finished in the top 5 in all 4 starts, producing an exceptional 3.5 average finish. The issue is that his 25 career laps led at the track suggest his results have been stronger than his race control. At +700, he is worth attention after practice, but Hamlin presents a better balance between price, recent speed, and track history.
Gateway has never produced a Cup winner from outside the first 7 starting positions. Hamlin, Blaney, and Bell have all qualified well here historically, with Hamlin averaging a 4.0 starting position and Blaney 3.75. If Hamlin lands near the front Saturday and +425 remains available, the case becomes stronger. If the price falls much below +350, most of the value identified by our model disappears.
World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, is a 1.25-mile paved oval, but the lap does not drive like a conventional intermediate track. Turns 1 and 2 carry 11 degrees of banking and have a tighter radius, while Turns 3 and 4 have 9 degrees and are broader. That difference forces teams to search for a setup that remains stable under heavy braking at one end without sacrificing rotation and drive off the other.
Sunday's race is scheduled for 240 laps and 300 miles. Stage 1 ends after Lap 45, Stage 2 concludes at Lap 140, and the final stage runs through Lap 240. The track's layout tends to place a premium on braking performance, mechanical grip, and track position. Passing can become difficult when cars are closely matched, making pit execution and restarts especially important.
The short Cup history here is revealing. Joey Logano won from 7th in 2022, Kyle Busch won from the pole in 2023, Austin Cindric won from 2nd in 2024, and Hamlin won from the pole in 2025. No winner has started outside the top 10, and the deepest winning position has been 7th. Two of the first 4 races required overtime, so late cautions remain a significant variable even if one car establishes control during a long green-flag run.
