The Pirates and Astros close out their series Thursday night at Daikin Park after splitting the first two games. Pittsburgh entered the series with the stronger overall record, but Houston showed plenty of life in Wednesday's dramatic 11-9 comeback victory. That win ended a rough stretch for the Astros and highlighted the strength of a lineup that remains capable of producing big innings despite a disappointing start to the season. Here, I break down this Pirates vs Astros rubber match and make my pick for it in the MLB betting markets.
Pittsburgh owns the better season-long pitching numbers, but this specific matchup leans toward Houston. Jared Jones is still building up after missing significant time and looked rusty in his first outing. The Astros lineup has been making consistent contact recently, led by Yordan Alvarez, who collected 4 hits on Wednesday and has been one of the club's most productive hitters.
The Pirates remain dangerous offensively with Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, Brandon Lowe, Ryan O'Hearn, and Nick Gonzales contributing throughout the lineup. Gonzales has emerged as one of Pittsburgh's most consistent bats, carrying a .314 average into Thursday's action. Even so, the combination of Kai-Wei Teng's recent success and Houston's home-field advantage gives the Astros a slight edge in what should be a competitive game.
Parlay Odds: +440
The Astros have generated offense throughout this series and face a pitcher who struggled in his season debut. Houston's bullpen was heavily tested on Wednesday, which could contribute to another game with scoring opportunities on both sides. Alvarez enters the contest after a 4-hit performance and remains the most dangerous hitter in the Houston lineup and he should notch at least two total bases here.
Yordan Alvarez to Hit a Home Run: +340
Alvarez is swinging the bat exceptionally well and enters Thursday with 21 home runs and a batting average above .300. Jones allowed plenty of hard contact in his first start, and Houston's star slugger gets a favorable opportunity against a pitcher still searching for his rhythm.

The overall season stat rundown favors Pittsburgh, particularly on the pitching side, but Thursday's game is more about the individual matchup than the full-season numbers. Teng has been one of Houston's bright spots, while Jones is still attempting to regain form after his return. Houston's offense also arrives with confidence after Wednesday's late comeback.
The Pirates have enough offensive talent to stay within striking distance, and their lineup should create scoring chances. However, Houston appears better positioned on the mound and has the more favorable matchup against the opposing starter. With Alvarez swinging a hot bat and the Astros showing renewed confidence at the plate, Houston is the preferred side for me here.
