The Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies wrap up their three-game series on Thursday, September 10, with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. ET at Citizens Bank Park. Cristian Javier (2-5, 5.98 ERA) gets the start for Houston opposite Zack Wheeler (12-5, 3.23 ERA).
Thursday’s finale will decide the series after Philadelphia came from behind for an 11-7 win Wednesday night to even things at one game apiece. Below, we’ll break down our Astros vs Phillies prediction, the pitching matchup, and the biggest storylines to watch in Thursday’s rubber match.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Javier looked much better his last time out, but his numbers on the road are still hard to trust. Wheeler has been the much more consistent starter this season, and I think that gives Philadelphia a pretty clear advantage on the mound. I’m siding with the Phillies to win the series finale.”
Phillies Priced as 64% Favorites
Polymarket currently prices Philadelphia around 64¢ to win Thursday’s series finale, giving the Phillies an implied win probability of roughly 64%. Our model is a little more bullish on Philadelphia, projecting a 69% chance to win and a 5-3 final score.
Wheeler Gives Philadelphia the Edge
The starting pitching matchup is a big reason our model favors the Phillies. Javier enters with a 5.98 ERA and 1.55 WHIP, including a 6.65 ERA on the road, while Houston is just 1-6 in his road starts. Wheeler owns a 3.23 ERA and 1.08 WHIP this season, including a 1.62 ERA in day games, and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in three of his last four starts. That gives Philadelphia a clear advantage on the mound heading into Thursday’s finale.

Zack Wheeler has had a bit of a down year by his standards, entering Thursday with a 3.23 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 4.4 WAR. His 3.8 K/BB ratio is also his lowest since 2020, his first season with the Phillies.
August was especially rough, as Wheeler posted a 6.26 ERA and 1.72 WHIP. His worst start came in Seattle on August 24, when he gave up eight runs, nine hits, five walks, and four home runs in just four innings.
Wheeler looked much more like himself last Saturday against Atlanta, though, allowing just one run on three hits with nine strikeouts over six innings in a 4-2 win. With the playoffs getting closer, he may be starting to turn things around at the right time.
Yordan Alvarez has been the clear star of Houston’s offense this season and is now a heavy favorite to win AL MVP, trading around 93¢ on Kalshi. He ranks inside the top five in MLB with a .312 average, 38 home runs, and 162 hits, while his 1.022 OPS leads the league.
The Astros will need Alvarez to keep it going as they push toward the playoffs. Houston had a rough August offensively, finishing in the bottom half of MLB in runs, batting average, OPS, and several other major statistical categories. They’ve shown some encouraging signs in this series, though, scoring six runs in the opener and seven more Wednesday night.
The good news is they’ve also been a little better against right-handed pitching this year, posting a 105 wRC+ compared to 100 against lefties. That could help against Wheeler, but Alvarez will likely need to lead the way if Houston is going to keep its offense rolling in the series finale.
With just 16 games left, both teams still have plenty to play for. Houston (74-72) has a two-game lead over the Rangers in the AL West, but things could change quickly. The Guardians (74-73) currently hold the third and final AL Wild Card spot and are just a half-game behind the Astros, so a rough finish could leave Houston out of the playoffs altogether.
Philadelphia (82-64) has a little more breathing room, but the NL East is still within reach. The Phillies are three games behind the Braves and currently hold the top NL Wild Card spot, 1.5 games ahead of the Cubs (81-66). If they stay there, they’ll get to host the three-game Wild Card Series, but there’s still time to catch Atlanta and win the division.
