Manchester United vs Manchester City Preview: Where the Derby Will Be Won

The 199th Manchester Derby pits two of the league's outstanding attacking profiles against one another as Enzo Maresca's City visit Michael Carrick's Manchester United at Old Trafford. City have made a perfect start to their league campaign with nine points from nine and a +5.2 expected-goal differential, while United have only four points after snatching a draw from the jaws of victory at Everton last weekend.
Yet Michael Carrick’s side have still posted a +4.0 xGD through three league games. United have actually created more xG per game than City so far, which makes this less about whether they can compete and more about whether they can control the areas City are most efficient in exploiting.
Value Lies in the Totals Market
“City are the better defensive side and deserve to be favorites, but United’s attacking process is too strong to dismiss at Old Trafford. Carrick’s side have generated 8.4 xG through three league matches, including 6.7 from open play, while City have conceded only 2.4 xGA but now face a much higher-volume attack than anything they have seen domestically. Our model still makes City the most likely winner, but not by enough to justify 45¢ as the primary trade. The more attractive angle is Both Teams to Score, which better reflects United’s chance creation and City’s attacking efficiency.”
Polymarket Pricing
The moneyline is fairly compressed for a derby of this profile. City at 45¢ are only a moderate favorite, which is understandable given United’s home advantage and underlying numbers that belie their lowly league position. United at 31¢ are not an obvious value play either, because City have been far more stable defensively, conceding just 0.79 xGA/90 compared with United’s 1.48. The totals market is more interesting. Both Teams to Score at 66¢ implies roughly a two-thirds probability, and that looks defensible given United’s 2.81 xG per game and City’s 2.53 xG per game. Neither attack is relying on low-volume finishing alone, and United have already shown they can generate elite shot volume, leading the league with 68 shots through three matches. My projection puts BTTS Yes at 70%, which creates a modest but clearer edge than either side of the moneyline.

United’s season-wide attacking numbers are inflated by the 5.7 xG performance against Ipswich, so their established home profile is a better guide for this matchup. Last season, United generated 1.95 xG per game at Old Trafford, compared with 1.46 away, while averaging 17.8 shots and 6.8 shots on target at home.
That is the central tension in the game. City are conceding only 0.79 xGA per game, so United are facing the strongest defensive unit they have seen so far, but Old Trafford has consistently lifted their attacking output enough to make a home goal realistic.
United’s home numbers show they can generate volume, but City are well equipped to make that volume inefficient. Across Carrick’s 2025/26 sample, United averaged only 0.11 xG per shot, so the key is whether they can turn possession recoveries and quick combinations into chances inside the box rather than settling for lower-quality efforts from distance.
If Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans can receive between City’s midfield and defensive lines, United should be able to create cleaner looks for Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford. If City force those players away from central areas, the hosts may still reach 15 or more shots without producing enough real threat.
At the other end, City face a United defense conceding 1.48 xGA per game, which is the clearest statistical mismatch in the fixture. City are averaging 2.53 xG per game, and their ability to create repeated touches in the box should test a United back line that has not shown the same control as City’s.
United’s full-backs are likely to push aggressively when they have possession, which gives City a route to attack the spaces left behind. That becomes especially dangerous if United lose the ball before their midfield can reset.
United do not need to dominate possession to make this competitive. Their strongest route is likely to come from winning the ball and attacking before City can restore their defensive structure, which fits a home profile built on shot production rather than sustained territorial control.
The trade-off is that those transitions can stretch United themselves. If they commit numbers forward and fail to finish the move, City are one of the best teams in the league at turning the next phase into a high-quality chance.
The key question is whether United can maintain anything close to their 1.95 home xG baseline against a City defense conceding just 0.79 xGA per game.
If City suppress United’s shot quality and keep them near their 0.11 xG-per-shot Carrick-era level, the visitors should control the game. If United can access central areas early and turn transitions into higher-value chances, they have enough attacking quality at Old Trafford to score.
That is why Both Teams to Score - Yes remains the more interesting market than either side of the moneyline. City have the stronger defensive profile, but United’s home attacking numbers make a clean sheet less likely than their overall season record suggests.
Prediction: Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City
Best prediction: Both Teams to Score - Yes at 66¢
