Oklahoma vs Michigan Prediction & Preview: Are the Wolverines in Trouble?

No. 11 Oklahoma and Michigan meet for a highly anticipated rematch on Saturday, September 12, with kickoff set for 12 p.m. ET at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. The Sooners won last year’s matchup 24-13 in Norman, and both teams come into the rematch at 1-0.
Oklahoma had no trouble in its season opener, while Michigan is coming off a much different kind of win. The Wolverines needed a controversial extra second and a Hail Mary to escape Western Michigan 13-12, and that finish has been one of the biggest talking points in college football all week.
Below, we’ll break down our Oklahoma vs Michigan prediction, preview the matchup, and take a closer look at the biggest storylines heading into Saturday.
Why Our Model Sees Value:
“This market has moved quite a bit from where it was before the season, but I still don’t think it has moved enough. Michigan barely escaped Western Michigan last week, and I’m not convinced things are going to get much better under new head coach Kyle Whittingham. Oklahoma is a much tougher matchup, and with John Mateer healthy and back for the Sooners, I think they can put up enough points to cover the 5.5-point handicap.”
Oklahoma -5.5 Priced Around 52¢
Polymarket currently prices Oklahoma around 52¢ to cover the 5.5-point handicap. Our model gives the Sooners a 56% chance of covering, creating a 4% edge at the current price. We project Oklahoma to win 31-20, giving the Sooners a little more separation than the market suggests.
Oklahoma Looked Much Better in Week 1
Oklahoma looked like the much more complete team in its opener, beating UTEP 51-0 and outgaining the Miners 401-198. Mateer picked up right where he left off, throwing for 225 yards and three touchdowns before leaving late in the third quarter. That's especially encouraging after he accounted for 344 total yards and all three Oklahoma touchdowns against Michigan last season. The Wolverines, meanwhile, turned the ball over three times and managed just 276 yards against Western Michigan. If those Week 1 performances are any indication, 5.5 points may not be enough.

Bryce Underwood's sophomore season didn't exactly get off to the start Michigan was hoping for. Before the game-winning Hail Mary, he was just 11-of-21 for 127 yards with an interception against Western Michigan. He did make some plays with his legs, rushing for 47 yards and a touchdown, but the passing game was a struggle for most of the afternoon.
New head coach Kyle Whittingham didn't give him much of a vote of confidence afterward, either. He called Underwood the starter "right now" while making it pretty clear that could change if things don't improve. There's already plenty of pressure on Underwood to take the next step after arriving at Michigan as the consensus No. 1 overall high school prospect in the class of 2025.
Things won't get any easier for Michigan's offense on Saturday. Oklahoma finished sixth in the country in total defense last season, allowing just 272.5 yards per game, and brings back a strong core from that unit.
We saw how tough this matchup can be when these teams met in Norman last year. The Sooners held Michigan to 13 points, with Underwood completing just 9 of 24 passes for 142 yards. Justice Haynes was really the only Wolverine who got much going, rushing for 125 yards and a touchdown, and he's now at Georgia Tech.
Defensive linemen David Stone and Jaden Jackson are back for Oklahoma, along with linebackers Kip Lewis and Owen Heinecke. The Sooners looked just as good to start this season, shutting out UTEP and holding the Miners to 198 total yards.
John Mateer will face Michigan again on Saturday, this time in the Big House. The senior quarterback had one of his better games of the season against the Wolverines last year, throwing for 270 yards and a touchdown while adding 74 yards and two more scores on the ground in Oklahoma's 24-13 win.
Mateer's season changed a few weeks later when he injured the thumb on his throwing hand against Auburn. He underwent surgery and returned just 17 days later, but played through the injury for much of the season and finished with 2,885 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Now healthy and back in the Heisman conversation, Mateer looked sharp in Week 1, throwing for 225 yards and three touchdowns in Oklahoma's 51-0 win over UTEP.
The big question we're all wondering is whether Michigan's Week 1 performance is actually indicative of who they are this season. Did the Wolverines just barely escape against an underrated in-state opponent because they were looking ahead to Oklahoma and didn't want to put too much on tape? Or were those struggles a sign of what's to come? I'm leaning toward the latter.
I'm just not sold on Bryce Underwood being the quarterback who can get Michigan back into Big Ten contention, especially in a new offense under coordinator Jason Beck. The defense is a different story. Jyaire Hill and Smith Snowden give them plenty of talent in the secondary, Troy Bowles adds experience at linebacker, and I expect that group to be pretty good under a defensive-minded coach like Kyle Whittingham.
But at some point, Michigan has to score. After putting up just 13 points against Western Michigan last week and 13 against Oklahoma a year ago, I haven't seen enough from this offense to trust them against one of the better defenses in the country.
