Western Kentucky and New Mexico State enter Thursday night with matching 1-3 records. Western Kentucky finally broke through with a 52-7 win over Mercyhurst after opening with road losses to Nevada, Georgia, and Indiana. New Mexico State is coming off a 42-18 rivalry loss to New Mexico after earlier games against Florida State, Mercyhurst, and Hawaii. Both teams are 0-0 in Conference USA, so this game offers a clean reset and an early chance to establish a place in the league race.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“New Mexico State has produced the steadier offense, owns the home-field advantage, and has been far more efficient on third down. Western Kentucky's 52-point showing against Mercyhurst was impressive, but it followed 34 total points across the Hilltoppers' first 3 games.”
Slight Edge With the Aggies
Polymarket currently prices New Mexico State at 56¢ and Western Kentucky at 45¢ in the game-winner market. That keeps this fairly close to coin-flip territory, with only a modest lean to the Aggies. The spread market sits at New Mexico State -2.5, while the total is around 57.5. My number is a little stronger on the home side, giving New Mexico State about a 60% chance to win.
Where the Value Lies
The value comes from how repeatable the Aggies' offensive production looks. New Mexico State is averaging 414.5 yards per game, including 278.5 through the air, and has converted 50% of its third downs. Western Kentucky deserves some grace for an unusually difficult opening schedule, but its offense is averaging about 344 yards per game and was held to 225 yards at Georgia and 186 at Indiana. WKU looked much better against Mercyhurst, yet New Mexico State also handled that opponent 51-14 while gaining 554 yards. At 56¢, the Aggies still offer enough separation from my projection to support the prediction.

Both teams begin Conference USA play at 0-0, which makes their overall records less damaging than they might appear. Western Kentucky faced Georgia and Indiana in consecutive weeks, while New Mexico State opened at Florida State and later traveled to Hawaii. A victory puts either side at 1-0 in conference play and gives October a very different feel.
The Aggies have shown more consistency moving the football. James Jones has 355 rushing yards on 57 carries, good for 6.2 yards per attempt, and he has gone over 100 rushing yards twice. Western Kentucky has already allowed 323 rushing yards to Nevada and 234 to Georgia.
New Mexico State also has enough passing production to prevent WKU from selling out against the run. Trey Hedden has thrown for 887 yards, while TK King leads the team with 265 receiving yards. Hedden has also thrown 5 interceptions, so Western Kentucky's clearest route to an upset is creating short fields and making those mistakes expensive.
Rodney Tisdale Jr. gave Western Kentucky its best offensive performance of the season against Mercyhurst, completing 19 of 23 passes for 309 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Hilltoppers finished with 596 total yards and 6 passing touchdowns as a team. That game showed what this offense can look like when the protection holds, and receivers have time to separate.
The question when making college football predictions for this game is whether that performance travels. Western Kentucky will have played 4 of its first 5 games away from home, and the offense struggled to sustain drives against its stronger opponents. New Mexico State does not have the defensive talent of Georgia or Indiana, but a short-week trip to Las Cruces is still a tougher setting than WKU faced in its home win last Saturday.
The key matchup is New Mexico State's offensive efficiency against Western Kentucky's ability to force negative plays. If the Aggies stay close to their 50% third-down rate and Jones keeps them out of long-yardage situations, they should generate enough scoring chances to control the game. Western Kentucky can answer through Tisdale, but New Mexico State has shown the more stable week-to-week production and my projections favor them winning at home.
