Updated September 30, 2026

North Texas and Tulsa kick off AAC play on Thursday, October 1, at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, with kickoff set for 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
The Mean Green (2-2) are coming off a dominant 63-14 win over Houston Christian, while the Golden Hurricane (3-1) return home after suffering their first loss of the season, 34-6 at Arkansas.
With both teams looking to start conference play on the right foot and questions surrounding Tulsa's quarterback situation, there's plenty to break down ahead of Thursday night. Below, we'll take a closer look at the matchup and make our North Texas vs Tulsa prediction.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“I'm backing Tulsa here, especially with rain and thunderstorms in the forecast. North Texas has struggled defensively against quality competition, and wet conditions could make it harder for the Mean Green to rely on their passing game. I'd like this pick even more if Baylor Hayes were playing, but I think Dexter Williams II can do enough against this North Texas defense to get Tulsa the win at home.”
Polymarket Pricing
Tulsa -1.5 is currently trading at 49¢ on Polymarket, while our model gives the Golden Hurricane a 54.5% chance to cover. That gives us a 5.5% edge at the current market price, with the model projecting a 30-26 Tulsa win.
Tulsa's Running Game Matches Up Well Against North Texas
Tulsa is averaging 5.2 yards per carry, while North Texas is allowing 164.8 rushing yards per game, including 337 against Texas State. Damari Alston and Trequan Jones give Tulsa a chance to control possession and keep Tayven Jackson off the field, especially if Thursday's forecasted rain becomes a factor.
Tulsa's Red-Zone Defense Could Make the Difference
North Texas is averaging 39.5 points per game, but Tulsa has allowed touchdowns on just four of 14 opponent red-zone trips this season. The Golden Hurricane have also forced seven turnovers, so their ability to force field goals or create a timely takeaway could be the difference in a close game.

Our full North Texas vs Tulsa model prediction projects a 30-26 Tulsa win, with Under 57.5 as its recommended pick. There are a few things that could swing this matchup either way, though, starting with North Texas quarterback Tayven Jackson and his impressive start to the season.
One of the biggest concerns for Tulsa backers is North Texas quarterback Tayven Jackson, who has been excellent since transferring from UCF. The senior has completed 74.2% of his passes for 1,187 yards, six touchdowns and just two interceptions through four games, averaging nearly 300 passing yards per contest.
Jackson is coming off an efficient performance against Houston Christian, completing 16 of 18 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown before sitting out the second half. The week before, he threw for 492 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-35 loss to Texas State, showing he can put up big numbers if Thursday's matchup turns into a shootout.
Tulsa's biggest question heading into Thursday is whether starting quarterback Baylor Hayes will be back after missing the last two games with a knee injury. Hayes completed 33 of 53 passes for 353 yards, one touchdown and one interception in his first two starts before getting hurt.
Backup Dexter Williams II threw three touchdowns against East Texas A&M in Week 3, but struggled a bit against on the road at Arkansas last week. He completed 20 of 32 passes for 176 yards in Tulsa's 34-6 loss.
Head coach Tre Lamb has called Hayes a "game-time decision" for Thursday. Tulsa would certainly like to have its starter back for the AAC opener, but Williams has two starts under his belt if Hayes isn't ready to go.
North Texas is allowing 30.3 points and 377.3 yards per game, but its defense has been especially vulnerable on the road. The Mean Green have given up 50.5 points and 485 yards per game in their two road losses to Indiana and Texas State, compared to just 10 points per game at home.
That could be a problem against Tulsa's running game. Damari Alston and Trequan Jones have combined for 409 rushing yards and six touchdowns, while receiver Oran Singleton Jr. leads the Golden Hurricane with 202 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Linebacker Brandon Jones leads North Texas with 24 tackles and three tackles for loss, and he'll need to play a big role in slowing down Tulsa's rushing attack. The Mean Green will also need to generate more pressure up front to keep Tulsa's quarterbacks from finding Singleton and the rest of their receivers.
This has all the makings of a great Thursday night matchup between two quality teams in the American, and it should be a nice way to kick off what looks like an exciting Week 5 college football slate.
North Texas has been impressive offensively under its new coaching staff, but I'm not sold on its defense just yet, especially after what we saw in its two road losses. The possibility of rain and thunderstorms adds another wrinkle to this matchup, and hopefully, we can avoid any lightning delays.
Tulsa, meanwhile, is 2-0 at home this season, including its win over now-No. 19-ranked Oklahoma State. With the Golden Hurricane's home-field advantage, a running game that matches up well against North Texas and a defense I trust more in this matchup, I'm leaning toward Tulsa in a close one.
Prediction: Tulsa 30, North Texas 26
