UMass Coming Off a Disappointing Opener

The UMass Minutemen suffered a loss in the first game of their college football season, falling at home to Eastern Michigan by a score of 28-14. That game represented arguably the best chance for UMass to win a game against an FBS opponent this season, though they do play UConn later in the year. Here, the Minutemen will look to regroup and pull off an upset win on the road against one of the better teams in the MAC.

The offense for UMass just wasn't enough to hang around against Eastern Michigan in Week 1. The UMass offense mustered just 329 total yards and had just 177 yards through their air. Quarterback Taisun Phommachanh has to be more effective delivering the football to his receivers if UMass wants any chance of winning this game, or even covering the spread as a sizable underdog.

Can Toledo Offense Sustain Its Level In FBS Opener?

Toledo got a blowout win in its season opener, winning 49-10 over Duquesne of the FCS in Week 1 of the season. Now the Rockets will look for a second win in a row against a UMass team that they are heavy favorites to beat. But for that to pan out for the Rockets, they are going to need their offense to step up against an FBS opponent, something that was a struggle for them a season ago.

Last season Toledo ended their season with two straight losses to Northern Illinois in the MAC championship game and Wyoming in the Arizona Bowl. In those two games, the Rockets averaged 14.5 points per game on offense. And while that was a different team than the one they have now, and UMass is worse than those opponents were, the offensive output of Toledo against an FBS opponent is still something to keep an eye on in this UMass vs Toledo contest.

While Toledo has struggled against FBS opponents in their last couple of games against them, we expect them to get right offensively against UMass here. Lay the points with Toledo, who should be able to win this game by three touchdowns or more at home against a UMass team that will drop to 0-2 against MAC opponents on the season.
