Arizona vs BYU Prediction & Preview: Big 12 Teams Look For 2-0 Start

Updated September 10, 2026
Arizona and BYU move from comfortable season openers to a much more revealing test Saturday in Provo. Arizona beat Northern Arizona 35-7 while producing 520 yards, and BYU dismantled Utah Tech 63-7 behind 521 yards and four takeaways. Both teams enter 1-0, but this is their first Big 12 game of 2026 and their first game against an FBS opponent. BYU has also won five straight meetings in the series, including a 33-27 double-overtime victory last season and will look to extend that streak at home.
BYU a 73% Favorite to Win
Polymarket currently prices BYU -7.5 at roughly 49¢, while the outright market gives BYU about a 73% chance to win. The market is quite confident that BYU wins the game, but it remains much less certain that the Cougars clear the 7.5-point margin. Our model is slightly more aggressive on the spread and gives BYU a 53.5% chance of covering, creating a 4.5% edge.
Can Arizona's Offense Keep Up?
There is a reasonable argument for Arizona at this number. Noah Fifita gives the Wildcats an experienced quarterback, and Arizona received significant news Thursday when running back Ismail Mahdi and linebacker Max Harris became eligible to play. Mahdi led Arizona with 859 rushing yards last season, while Harris recorded 78 tackles. Those additions improve Arizona's outlook, but the current price still appears to underestimate BYU's advantages in the trenches and at home. My projected score is BYU 31, Arizona 21.

Why Our Model Sees Value:
“Arizona's opening margin of victory hides three turnovers against Northern Arizona, while BYU showed a cleaner offense, a deeper rushing attack, and a major advantage in creating takeaways. Home-field advantage in Provo and BYU's ability to control the game on the ground give the Cougars a better chance of separating than the current price suggests.”
This is the conference opener for both programs, so one team will immediately leave Provo with an advantage in a league where the race for the championship game could be crowded. Arizona improved from 4-8 in 2024 to 9-4 last season, while BYU entered 2026 after consecutive double-digit-win seasons. Polymarket's Big 12 futures market currently gives BYU a 17% chance to win the Big 12 and Arizona about 3%, another indication of the gap in preseason expectations.
The most important matchup that will impact the outcome of Arizona vs BYU predictions may come between BYU's rushing attack and an Arizona front that dominated Northern Arizona. The Wildcats held their opener opponent to minus 7 rushing yards and recorded five sacks. That is an exceptional opening result, although the jump in opponent quality is substantial.
BYU ran for 308 yards against Utah Tech, with 11 players recording a rushing attempt. LJ Martin produced 54 yards on only seven carries, while Bear Bachmeier added 30 yards and a touchdown. Last season against Arizona, Martin ran for 162 yards, and Bachmeier added 89. If BYU can consistently stay ahead of the chains again, Arizona may have difficulty creating enough possessions to keep the margin inside one score.
Fifita remains Arizona's clearest route to an upset. He completed 22 of 29 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns in the opener, and he enters this matchup with more than 9,400 career passing yards. Arizona also generated 314 total passing yards against Northern Arizona.
BYU counters with a defense that forced four turnovers against Utah Tech, including three interceptions. Starting safety Raider Damuni suffered a knee injury in that game, which could create opportunities for Arizona through the air. Still, BYU's ability to pressure Fifita without sacrificing bodies in pass coverage will be central to whether the Cougars can build the margin needed to cover the number.
Arizona's three turnovers against Northern Arizona are the biggest concern for the Wildcats. BYU committed none in its opener and forced four. The competition level makes both Week 1 results difficult to project onto this week's game, but possession value becomes far more important in a matchup expected to be competitive deep into the game.
BYU does not need another 63-point performance. It just needs Bachmeier to protect the football, Martin and the offensive line to control early downs, and its defense to force Fifita into a few difficult possessions. That formula gives the Cougars enough paths to create a 10-point or greater victory, making BYU -7.5 my preferred position at the current Polymarket price.
