Key Storylines
- Regular-season rematch: These two teams met last month in Tuscaloosa, with Oklahoma surviving a late Alabama push to win 23–21. Oklahoma’s defense and special teams scored 17 points off turnovers, including an 87-yard interception return. That result left a sour taste for Alabama, and now the Tide must reverse the outcome on OU’s home turf to keep their title hopes alive.
- Home-field advantage in a playoff atmosphere: As the higher seed, Oklahoma gets home-field advantage for this contest. With Oklahoma making their first appearance in the new playoff, that venue should be loud from start to finish and that could give the Sooners the boost that they need to get the job done and advance.
- The playoff window for both squads: Oklahoma’s at-large resume-boosting win at Alabama helped them secure their berth in the playoff. For Alabama, this is a second chance. The Crimson Tide got in as the 9th seed after a disappointing SEC Championship loss to Georgia. Both teams will try to make up for the fact that they didn’t win the SEC title by playing well in this game to advance to take on Indiana in the quarterfinals.
Quarterback Play
Alabama is led by Ty Simpson, who has logged 3,268 passing yards, 26 touchdown passes, and 5 interceptions. His ability to push the ball downfield and connect with his receiving corps remains the primary offensive weapon for the Crimson Tide. But Simpson completed under half of his passes against Georgia in the SEC title game and will need to step up here.
John Mateer is the starting quarterback for Oklahoma. Mateer is capable of making plays with his arm and his legs. He only threw for 138 yards against Alabama in their first meeting this season, but he also had an important rushing touchdown to help the Sooners win that contest.
