The Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals bring together two familiar rivals on Friday afternoon as Wisconsin meets Illinois in Chicago. Both teams arrive with strong records and recent high-scoring performances, setting the stage for a competitive game with high conference tournament stakes. Illinois enters as the higher seed after a strong regular season, while Wisconsin advanced with a tightly contested victory the day before and now attempts to keep its tournament run alive in this Wisconsin vs Illinois contest.
Illinois finished the regular season with a 24-7 record and earned the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. The Illini recently secured a 78-72 win over Maryland and continue to lean on one of the conference’s most balanced lineups. Freshman guard Keaton Wagler has emerged as the centerpiece of the offense and earned major postseason recognition after averaging nearly 18 points per game this season.
Wisconsin, the No. 5 seed at 23-9, had to survive a tight opening contest in this tournament. The Badgers defeated Washington 85-82 behind a historic performance from John Blackwell, who poured in 34 points while adding 10 rebounds. Wisconsin never trailed in that contest and built an 18-point lead before holding off a late rally from the Huskies.
Fatigue could be a factor for Wisconsin after playing Thursday, while Illinois enters the quarterfinal rested. However, the Badgers already proved earlier this season that they can compete with the Illini after winning a 92-90 overtime game in Champaign in February.
Illinois Fighting Illini
Wisconsin Badgers
Stat | Wisconsin | Illinois |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 83.3 | 84.3 |
Points allowed per game | 75.8 | 69.1 |
Team Field Goal % | 45% | 46% |
Rebounds per game | 35.9 | 40.8 |
Assists per game | 15.9 | 14.8 |
These teams already proved earlier this season that the matchup between them is extremely close. Wisconsin’s ability to shoot from deep and limit turnovers helped it steal the earlier meeting, and the Badgers once again have the guard play to keep things competitive.
The difference in this rematch may come down to depth and rest. Illinois enters the quarterfinal with fresh legs, while Wisconsin played a high-intensity game less than 24 hours earlier. Illinois also owns the rebounding edge and the stronger defensive numbers, allowing about 10 fewer points per game than Wisconsin.
I expect Illinois to win this game, thanks in large part to their rest advantage and their explosive offense. But I'm going to take the points with the Badgers as the underdog here, as this game should be decided by about two possessions.
