SEC Tournament play continues Friday with an intrastate clash in the quarterfinals as Tennessee faces Vanderbilt in Nashville. The rivals split their regular-season meetings, setting the stage for a high-stakes rubber match with postseason positioning on the line. Vanderbilt enters the quarterfinal round with extra rest after earning a double bye, while Tennessee advanced after a strong performance in the second half against Auburn on Thursday. Before tip-off from Nashville, continue reading to find my Tennessee vs Nashville prediction.
These teams have already delivered two competitive meetings this season. Tennessee secured a 69-65 road win in February, but Vanderbilt answered in the rematch with an 86-82 victory in Knoxville behind a strong offensive effort. That result helped the Commodores secure a top-four seed in the SEC Tournament and a double bye.
Tennessee arrives with solid form after picking up an important win earlier in the tournament against a desperate bubble team in Auburn. The Volunteers have leaned on strong defensive play and rebounding dominance throughout the season. Their ability to control the glass has been a major advantage, giving them extra possessions and limiting second-chance opportunities for opponents.
Vanderbilt counters with one of the more efficient offenses in the conference. The Commodores rank among the top-scoring teams in the country and rely heavily on perimeter shooting. Their spacing and guard play create frequent open looks, which can quickly swing games if they find a rhythm early.
Another factor is rest. Vanderbilt did not play earlier tournament rounds thanks to its seeding, while Tennessee is playing for the second straight day. The Volunteers may benefit from entering with a game under their belt, though Vanderbilt should have fresher legs late.
Vanderbilt Commodores
Tennessee Volunteers
Stat | Tennessee | Vanderbilt |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 80.1 | 86.9 |
Points allowed per game | 69.2 | 75.1 |
Team Field Goal % | 47% | 48% |
Rebounds Per Game | 42.6 | 35.8 |
Assists Per Game | 17.1 | 16.4 |
Vanderbilt owns the more explosive offense and will attempt to push the pace while generating open perimeter looks. Tennessee counters with rebounding dominance and a defense capable of slowing high-scoring teams for long stretches of games.
The Volunteers’ edge on the glass could prove decisive. Tennessee averages nearly seven more rebounds per game than Vanderbilt and consistently creates extra possessions. In tournament settings where every possession carries greater weight, that advantage becomes even more valuable. This should be an incredibly close game, and I'll take the Vols to win it at even money thanks to their ability to battle on the boards.
