- Iowa has a little more upside with their supporting cast, which should help them to pull this game out in the end.
- Caitlin Clark is coming off of a 41-point game against LSU and will factor heavily into the outcome of this game as well.
The eyes of the sports world will be on the UConn vs Iowa matchup in the Women’s Final Four on Friday night. These two teams both have legitimate superstars on their rosters, as Paige Bueckers leads UConn up against Caitlin Clark and Iowa. But it will be the rest of these two teams that will ultimately make the difference in what should be a memorable matchup in Cleveland.
UConn Huskies
The UConn Huskies were a three-seed in one of the Portland regions of the 2024 NCAA Tournament. But they managed to win their way into the Final Four nonetheless, with their most recent triumph coming in the Elite 8 over the top-seeded USC Trojans. In that game, Paige Bueckers went off for 28 points, but it will be the supporting cast of the Huskies who will be the difference between reaching the championship game and falling short in the Final Four.
Aaliyah Edwards will be especially important to the national title game hopes of the Huskies in Friday’s game. Edwards scored 24 points and was the only player to join Bueckers in double-digits for UConn against USC on Monday. Bueckers will need some help again against Iowa and Edwards is the most likely to provide it for her.
Iowa Hawkeyes
In the most-watched women’s basketball game in history, the Iowa Hawkeyes advanced to the Final Four with a win over the LSU Tigers in Albany, NY on Monday night. Caitlin Clark stole the show in that game, as she so often does, scoring 41 points and making nine three-point shots to help her team pull away in the second half. Clark will undoubtedly play a huge role in the outcome of UConn vs Iowa, but her supporting cast will also need to deliver once again.
On Monday, Iowa had three double-figure scorers: Clark, Kate Martin, and Sydney Affolter. If Martin and Affolter can step up once again, and Hannah Steulke can play a little better now that she isn’t facing the physicality of LSU, Iowa could be the team advancing to play either NC State or South Carolina for the national title.
