They are 10-3 in Big East play as well, ranking third in the conference heading into Saturday’s slate. They are coming off of a win over lowly Georgetown in their last game, and will look for a road win over St John’s here.
Defense will be what gets Providence through this game, as they are the clearly superior team on that end of the floor. The Friars are allowing 68.6 points per game on the season, giving up nearly six points per game less than the Red Storm entering this matchup.
St. John’s Red Storm
St. John’s has been struggling of late, having lost three straight games. Those losses came against Seton Hall, Xavier, and Butler, with the defense of the Red Storm letting them down for the most part. They allowed 84 points to Seton Hall and 96 points to Xavier, and they will need to avoid putting themselves in a bad spot by giving up another big number here.
If St. John’s is going to topple a ranked opponent in this game, center Joel Soriano will need to continue to own the paint. The Fordham transfer is averaging 15.4 points and 12.0 rebounds per game for the Red Storm. The Johnnies will need to go to him early and often to get Providence into foul trouble on the interior and try to secure easy buckets.
