In Friday’s NC State vs Marquette matchup, we like the NC State Wolfpack to cover the spread as an underdog. NC State has been an underdog regularly throughout the last couple of weeks, winning seven straight single-elimination games to qualify for the NCAA Tournament and reach the Sweet 16. While the Wolfpack may not win this game, they should do enough to keep the final margin within a couple of possessions.
As has been the case throughout this run for NC State, their physicality in the paint will give them a significant advantage. DJ Burns is not only great at backing defenders down to score, but he is also a great passer out of the post. He will continue to make an impact in this game, one where there will be way less pressure on NC State than there was in the last round, where they had to hold off the upset bid of Oakland.
On the Marquette side, consistency has been an issue in the NCAA Tournament. They have played two very good halves of basketball, those being the second half against Western Kentucky and the first half against Colorado. But they have also played two bad halves of basketball during that stretch and any sort of slip up over the course of 20 minutes against NC State could be devastating to their hopes of reaching the Elite 8.
Overall, this should be a phenomenal basketball game and we like NC State to cover the number. But Marquette should win this NC State vs Marquette matchup outright and advance to the next round, where they will face the winner of the Duke vs Houston game, and will be just one win away from reaching the Final Four.
