Atlantic 10 Teams To Watch
The Atlantic 10 Conference ranks 12th out of all 32 college basketball conferences in terms of its teams’ average NET ranking. In these rankings, the A-10 sits just ahead of the Ivy League and Sun Belt Conference and falls right behind the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, and the Western Athletic Conference.
With a plethora of talent in the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament field, it seems there are plenty of A-10 programs capable of cutting down the nets at Barclays Center on March 12 and earning a trip to the Big Dance.
Here are some of the top teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference to keep an eye on as we approach the postseason:
VCU Rams
The VCU Rams have appeared to be the conference’s most dominant team throughout the 2022-2023 regular season. They have earned nonconference victories against Pittsburgh and Vanderbilt and defeated quality conference opponents such as Dayton, Fordham, and Saint Louis.
The Rams lead the Atlantic 10 in defensive efficiency and steals per game, and they also rank second in points per game allowed and third in blocks per game and opponent field goal percentage. Led by junior Adrian Baldwin Jr. and senior Brandon Johns Jr., VCU seems to have what it takes to make some noise in this year’s A-10 Tournament and NCAA Tournament, if given the opportunity.
Fordham Rams
The Fordham Rams are another team to keep an eye on as we approach the 2023 men’s college basketball postseason. The Rams have been dominant at home this year, earning more home wins than any other team in the conference, and they have already secured solid wins against teams like Tulane, Duquesne, and Saint Louis.
Fordham has seemed to struggle against some of the more talented teams on its schedule, losing by double-digits to Arkansas, VCU, and Dayton. Nevertheless, the Rams lead the Atlantic 10 Conference in free throw percentage and blocked shots and are top five in points per game, opponent points per game, offensive rebounds, and steals.
Furthermore, seniors Darius Quisenberry and Khalid Moore have had outstanding seasons for the Rams, as they are averaging 17.1 and 14.9 points per game, respectively, on the year while each playing over 30 minutes per game. Fordham has already earned its most wins in a single season since 1990-1991, and the Rams will hope to earn their first NCAA Tournament appearance of the 21st century.
Saint Louis Billikens
The Saint Louis Billikens have been one of the Atlantic 10 Conference’s top teams in recent history, and they have put together another successful season in their 2022-2023 campaign. Early in the season, the Billikens earned wins against Providence, Memphis, and Drake while also managing to hold their own against teams like Auburn and Boise State.
In conference play, Saint Louis has been impressive, but they have dropped important regular season games to other top teams in the league such as VCU, Fordham, and Dayton. That said, the Billikens lead the Atlantic 10 in rebounds per game and assist/turnover ratio, and they are second in points per game and opponent field goal percentage.
Saint Louis appears to still be one of the conference’s most dangerous teams and will now look to earn their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012.
Dayton Flyers
Just like Saint Louis, the Dayton Flyers have played one of the Atlantic 10 Conference’s more difficult schedules. They faced off against quality opponents such as NC State, Wisconsin, BYU, Virginia Tech, and UNLV before beginning A-10 play.
Although the Flyers came away winless against these tougher opponents, some stiff competition seems to have proved beneficial, as they now own one of the league’s best records and have already knocked off VCU, Saint Louis, Fordham, and Duquesne, among others.
Sophomore Daron Holmes II has been unstoppable lately. He is averaging 18.3 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per game on 59.7% shooting from the field. Dayton leads the Atlantic 10 Conference in points per game allowed, opponent field goal percentage, and opponent three-point field goal percentage while also being top three in the league in field goal percentage, blocked shots, assists, and defensive rebounds.
After four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2014-2017, the Flyers have not managed to make it back to the Big Dance. However, this year’s Dayton team may have exactly what it takes to win their conference tournament and compete once again among college basketball’s best during March Madness.
2023 Atlantic 10 Tournament Best Bets
With so many talented teams capable of making a big run in the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament, trying to pick the sole winner is no easy task.
However, the best bets for the 2023 A-10 Tournament have been determined based on the teams’ strength of schedule, ability to win away from home, and overall body of work. These best bets are shared below and include the top choice, best value, and sleeper pick from among the 15 teams set to compete in Brooklyn, New York beginning on Tuesday, March 7.
Top Pick: VCU
To no one’s surprise, the VCU Rams have been selected as the top pick to win the 2023 A-10 Tournament. They are the safe and smart choice, as the Rams have looked to be the best team in the conference for the majority of the year.
Head Coach Mike Rhoades and the Rams have the highest NET ranking among all members of the Atlantic 10 Conference, and their defense is arguably one of the most dominant in the entire country.
Even though they have a legitimate shot at earning an at-large bid in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, VCU will be extremely motivated to take care of business at Barclays Center and will not want to leave anything up to chance.
Best Value: Dayton
Despite their last A-10 Tournament Championship coming in the early 2000s, the Dayton Flyers have consistently been one of the conference’s best teams since joining the league in the 1995-1996 season.
The Flyers have already earned victories this season on the road against VCU and Fordham and at home against Saint Louis. They boast the league’s best defense, in terms of points per game allowed and opponent field goal percentage, and are more than capable of competing with anybody in the Atlantic 10.
Dayton may be one of the younger teams in the conference, but they are also one of the most talented, and that is why they have a great chance of winning this year’s Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship.
Sleeper Pick: St. Bonaventure
After losing about 99% of their team’s scoring from the 2021-2022 season, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies have quietly put together a fairly decent campaign so far this year.
Although the program’s standards and expectations are generally much higher, especially given the fact that the Bonnies have made two NCAA Tournament appearances since 2018 and won both the A-10 regular season and conference tournament in 2021, the 2022-2023 St. Bonaventure team has fared pretty well given the circumstances.
The Bonnies will finish the year with their most losses since the 2007-2008 season. This includes tough defeats against underwhelming opponents like Canisius, Rhode Island, Northern Iowa, and Loyola Chicago.
However, they have also managed to earn quality victories against VCU, Dayton, and Duquesne. Head Coach Mark Schmidt landed some key transfers over the summer (Daryl Banks III, Chad Vennings, and Kyrell Luc, among others), who have each stepped up big-time and helped the team show flashes of greatness at various points throughout the year.
Given the long odds and St. Bonaventure’s recent success in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament (two championship game appearances over the last three tournaments), this seems like it could be a very smart bet to make for the 2023 A-10 Tournament.
How To Bet on the 2023 Atlantic 10 Tournament
There are many different ways for you to bet on the upcoming 2023 Atlantic 10 Tournament. Some of the most common betting options provided by sportsbooks are included below along with a detailed description and an example of a bet you could potentially make during this year’s A-10 Tournament!
Moneyline Bets
Placing a moneyline wager on a particular game is generally considered the simplest and most common way to bet. You just choose who you think is going to win in a given matchup, and if your pick is correct, then you can go ahead and collect your winnings! The payouts from moneyline bets typically depend on whether you are betting on a favorite or an underdog and how close the game is expected to be.
For example, if you successfully picked the Saint Louis Billikens, one of the Atlantic 10 Conference’s top teams, to beat the underdog La Salle Explorers in an A-10 Tournament game, the payout would be much less than if you correctly picked a struggling team like the UMass Minutemen to upset the heavy-favorite Duquesne Dukes in a second round matchup of the tournament.
Point Spreads
Another way you can bet on the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament is by placing a wager on the point spread for any matchup of your choice. A point spread will be determined by the sportsbook and reflects the amount by which one team is expected to win or lose the game.
For example, St. Bonaventure may be a 1.5-point favorite against Davidson in a second-round matchup of the A-10 Tournament. If you think the Bonnies will win the game by 2 or more points, then you would want to bet on them at -1.5 points. However, if you think the Wildcats will lose by one point or win the game outright, you would want to bet on them at +1.5 points.
Over/Under Totals
Instead of betting on the moneyline or point spread, you may choose to bet on the over/under total for an A-10 Tournament game. This refers to a bet on the total number of combined points that will be scored between the two opponents.
For example, the over/under total for a matchup between Dayton and Duquesne in the quarterfinals of the tournament may be set at 127.5 points. If you think 128 or more combined points will be scored in the game, you would want to bet the over. On the other hand, if you think 127 or fewer points will be scored, then you would want to bet the under.
Parlays
Parlay bets allow you to increase your potential earnings by combining two or more outcomes into a single bet. An example would be if you wanted to bet the over for a first-round matchup between the Loyola Ramblers and Richmond Spiders as well as the under for a first-round matchup between the Rhode Island Rams and La Salle Explorers.
If either wager lost, then the bet would be unsuccessful. However, if both wagers are winners, then you would receive a significant payout from your sportsbook!
Prop Bets
A unique way to bet on this year’s Atlantic 10 Tournament is by placing prop bets that are generally not related to the games’ final outcomes. Sports bettors may choose to place prop bets on a certain player’s performance in a given round of the conference tournament.
For instance, you may place a prop bet on George Washington’s James Bishop IV to score above 20.5 points in his second-round matchup of the tournament. If Bishop scores 21 or more points, then you would win the wager and collect your full winnings like you would for any other type of successful bet.
Futures
Lastly, sports bettors are able to place future bets on the 2023 A-10 Tournament. These include any wagers that depend on a future outcome that will not typically be decided anytime soon. For example, you could place a bet on VCU to take care of business at Barclays Center and win the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament before the first round even begins! If your pick is correct and the Rams cut down the nets on Sunday, March 12, then your would wager would be successful, and you would receive a full payout from the bet.
Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament History
The Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament has been played at the end of every college basketball regular season since 1977, excluding the year 2020 in which the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Temple Owls (who left the A-10 in 2013 for the American Athletic Conference) have won nine Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Championships, more than any other school.
The UMass Minutemen have won the second-most A-10 Tournament Championships with five, and the Xavier Musketeers (who left for the Big East in 2013) and Saint Joseph’s Hawks are tied in third with four A-10 Tournament Championships won over the years.
The Richmond Spiders, George Washington Colonials, Rhode Island Rams, Saint Louis Billikens, and St. Bonaventure Bonnies are all current members of the Atlantic 10 Conference with two conference tournament championships throughout history.
Fordham and George Mason are a pair of quality teams each seeking their first A-10 Tournament Championship in program history. Meanwhile, the VCU Rams are hoping to earn their first conference tournament title since 2015, Dayton is looking for their first win since 2003, and Duquesne hopes to claim the A-10 Tournament Championship for the first time since 1977.
