Atlanta Dream vs Golden State Valkyries 2026 WNBA Finals Series Preview & Predictions

Updated October 16, 2026

The 2026 WNBA Finals will not look the way many expected it to, as the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries will do battle for the right to be called WNBA champions this season. Atlanta has been dominant in the postseason thus far, reaching the finals without losing a playoff game, while Golden State has used its defense to stifle two of the most explosive opponents in the W. But something has to give in this series, the second best-of-seven Finals in league history.
Golden State Slight Favorites
Going into the Finals, Polymarket has listed Golden State as a slight favorite at 52.5¢ to come out on top, while Atlanta is priced at 48¢ to win the series. That pricing implies that there is very little separating these two teams, with home-court advantage for the Valkyries being the only real differentiator in the market going into Saturday's series opener.
Slight Value With the Underdog
With these teams so evenly matched, small differences will ultimately decide this series. Among them will be rebounding, a category that favors the Dream against just about anyone. Atlanta leads the WNBA in offensive rebounding rate and should be able to generate more second chances to make up for Golden State's elite defense. This series should go six or seven games, but the Dream get the slight edge in my projections.

Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Both of these teams have proven they can take out the best of the best this year. But the Dream have just a little more firepower and can impose their will on the glass, making them a slight favorite for me despite how the market has priced the series.”
During the 2026 WNBA Playoffs, the Atlanta Dream have played five games. They have won all five of those games, sweeping the Washington Mystics over two games before winning three straight against the New York Liberty to reach the Finals for the first time since 2013. They will attempt to win the Finals for the first time as the Atlanta Dream after falling short in their first three appearances.
Atlanta's defense has been especially impressive going into this series, something that should not be overlooked by those making WNBA predictions just because of how effective Golden State's defense is. The Dream have held their opponents under 85 points in four of their first five playoff games, and they will be expected to do more of the same in this series against a Valkyries team that plays at the league's slowest tempo.
The Golden State Valkyries were underdogs going into the semifinals despite having home-court advantage against the Las Vegas Aces. They responded with an impressive three-game sweep of Vegas, limiting five-time MVP A'ja Wilson in big moments and making enough offensive plays to take down the defending champions.
What has made Golden State so dangerous, along with their defense, is that they are so balanced offensively. Gabby Williams is their biggest threat, but weapons like Cecilia Zandalasini, Veronica Burton, and Kayla Thornton are criminally underrated and can also inflict damage upon opposing defenses. The question now is whether they can do so on this stage.
Rebounding is always a key when the Atlanta Dream are involved in a game. That, of course, starts with Angel Reese. This season's Defensive Player of the Year averaged 12.1 boards per game in the regular season and has followed that up with 8.4 rebounds per game in the playoffs. Do not be alarmed by that drop-off, though, as her postseason numbers have come against the Mystics and Liberty, two of the tallest teams in the W.
Golden State finding a way to neutralize Reese on the glass will be of vital importance to the outcome of this series. Reese had 12.7 rebounds per game in three regular-season meetings with the Valkyries this season. If Kiah Stokes and the rest of the Golden State frontcourt can't reduce those numbers in the Finals, the Dream could have the upper hand in this series.
Ultimately, this series is expected to be incredibly close throughout. It could be decided by which team is able to execute offensively in the final minutes of each game. For me, the Dream are better equipped to do that. I will take Atlanta to win their first Finals as the Dream and to do so in seven games.
