As the 2026 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells begins, an intriguing first-round matchup pits two seasoned ATP competitors against each other as Stefanos Tsitsipas and Denis Shapovalov cap off Wednesday's men's action. Both men are former Top 10 players and will collide in a best-of-three set opener on the hard courts of Southern California. With both combatants desperate for a win this Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Denis Shapovalov matchup is a big one on both sides of the net.
Pick: Shapovalov to win
Confidence: 2 out of 5
Stefanos Tsitsipas arrives at Indian Wells ranked in the mid-40s in the ATP rankings and looking to regain consistency after several early exits in recent tournaments. The Greek’s game combines heavy topspin from the baseline with varied angles and a strong net approach, traits that can trouble Shapovalov if executed cleanly. That said, Tsitsipas has endured a challenging stretch of results, including a recent loss in Dubai, which saw him fall to Ugo Humbert in straight sets without fully finding his rhythm.
Denis Shapovalov has quietly put together competitive results in 2026. El Shapo has dropped two straight matches, but made a deep run in Dallas before falling against Ben Shelton there and Pablo Carreno-Busta in Dubai. The left-handed Canadian is known for his big serve, powerful groundstrokes, and aggressive play, particularly on faster surfaces. Shapovalov holds a 4-2 advantage in their overall head-to-head series with Tsitsipas, and notably, hard courts have been his strong suit in this rivalry.
Both players are outside the elite tier they once occupied. A win here could set up a winnable second round match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina, while a loss would be a damaging early exit from a Masters 1000 event. Given their styles, expect long rallies with a ton of one-handed backhands from both men.
On balance, this match appears set to be incredibly close and could go either way. I don't know how you feel confident in either of these men to win against anyone right now with how much they have struggled. But I lean slightly toward Shapovalov in this match, as he is 4-0 lifetime against Tsitsipas on hard courts.
In fairness, Indian Wells is one of the slower hard-court stops on the ATP World Tour. And while I think there might be more value elsewhere on the board for those making tennis betting picks on Wednesday, Shapo's history on this surface against Tsitsipas should be enough to help him get into the next round.
Win Probability: Stefanos Tsitsipas 48%, Denis Shapovalov 52%
