The Women’s 15km Individual biathlon event at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina is one of the most grueling events of the Games. This classic distance tests athletes on both skiing endurance and precision shooting, where each miss typically adds a significant time penalty. With recent World Cup and World Championship performances providing key indicators of form, the field is deep and filled with athletes capable of rising to the challenge. Before this event begins, continue reading to get my Olympic women's 15km individual biathlon prediction.
As the Olympic biathlon program unfolds, one hot topic has been the strength and depth of the French women’s team, which claimed significant victories and podium finishes on the World Cup circuit and at the World Championships. Julia Simon claimed gold in the 15km Individual at the 2025 World Championships, demonstrating elite shooting and pacing that could translate to Olympic success. Lou Jeanmonnot, the World Cup leader, consistently finishes at the top of races and she enters the favorite here.
Italy’s biathletes also bring notable form into the race. Dorothea Wierer claimed victory in the only 15km Individual of the recent World Cup season in Östersund, showcasing her experience in this format. Wierer’s long career includes multiple Olympic and world medals, and her capacity to handle pressure makes her a danger in this event as well. Lisa Vittozzi, Italy’s other top contender, has shown strong form across World Cup events and proudly carries the expectations of the host nation.
Sweden’s Oeberg sisters, Elvira and Hanna, bring their own strengths to this event. Elvira’s speed makes her a serious threat, particularly if her shooting holds up, while Hanna is a former Olympic champion in the individual event. She has experience that could pay dividends in a race where consistency matters above all.
Finland’s Suvi Minkkinen is currently ranked second in the IBU World Cup overall standings heading into the Games. She is a refreshing storyline for a nation that has fought for prominence in biathlon beyond cross-country skiing.
Pick: Lisa Vittozzi (Italy) ATS PRO
Confidence: 4 out of 5
Choosing Vittozzi as the top prediction is rooted in her recent sprint performances and consistency in individual races, where the emphasis on pacing and shooting accuracy brings out her best. She thrives in races where patience and strategic pacing over challenging courses are key, fitting the profile of the 15km Individual at the Olympics. While the French duo of Jeanmonnot and Simon will be hard to beat, I am going to back Vittozzi to do just that in front of her home country.
