Lecce vs Monza Prediction & Preview: Can Lecce End Goalless Drought?

Lecce and Monza meet at the Stadio Via del Mare on Sunday with both clubs already under pressure to collect points near the bottom of Serie A. Lecce enter Matchweek 4 with 3 points after a win and 2 losses, while Monza have taken 1 point from their opening 3 matches. Lecce have also failed to score in consecutive league games, while Monza arrive after earning their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw at Parma.
Why Our Model Sees Value:
“The 59¢ price on the under gives too much weight to Monza's high-scoring opening losses and too little to Lecce's limited chance creation, Monza's attacking absences, and the likely cautious approach of 2 clubs that badly need points.”
Projections Favor the Under
My projection gives Under 2.5 a 63% chance, producing a 4.0% edge over the current Polymarket price. Lecce's attack is the main reason for the difference. They have scored just 2 goals in 3 Serie A matches, both coming in their opening 2-0 victory over Venezia. They were then shut out 4-0 by Roma and 1-0 by Cagliari. Against Cagliari, Lecce generated only 0.50 expected goals from 10 shots and managed just 13 touches in the opposition penalty area.
Monza's Injuries a Factor
Monza showed more attacking promise at Parma, producing 1.72 expected goals and 16 shots, but finished with only 1 goal. With Patrick Cutrone dealing with a physical issue and Matteo Pessina unavailable, Monza may again rely on a relatively young attacking unit. That creates enough uncertainty in the finishing department to make the Under appealing at the current 59¢ price.

The table adds significance to this match, even this early in the campaign. Lecce sit in 14th with 3 points and a -3 goal difference, while Monza are 17th with 1 point and a -4 goal difference. Lecce have scored only 2 times, while Monza have conceded 8 goals through 3 matches.
Neither side will want to turn this into an open game unnecessarily, with that approach being the basis of our Lecce vs Monza prediction. Lecce have Milan away next, making a home match against Monza an important opportunity to add points. Monza, meanwhile, are still searching for their first league victory under Ivan Juric.
Eusebio Di Francesco is expected to use a 4-3-3 with Nikola Stulic leading the attack and Santiago Pierotti among the wide options. Willem Geubbels is unavailable, further limiting Di Francesco's choices through the middle.
Lecce had 58% possession against Cagliari but created just 0.50 expected goals. That is the concern. Having the ball has meant little without enough penetration into dangerous positions. Monza's back 3 will likely be comfortable allowing Lecce possession in less threatening areas before closing space near the penalty area.
Monza's 1-1 draw at Parma was easily their most encouraging league performance so far. They controlled 54% of possession, attempted 16 shots and generated 1.72 expected goals compared with Parma's 0.73. Jay Robinson scored the opener and could earn another major role this weekend.
Still, converting those opportunities remains an issue. Monza missed several strong chances at Parma, while Cutrone's fitness remains uncertain and Pessina is out. Those absences reduce Juric's established attacking options.
The first goal should have an outsized effect. Lecce have gone 180 league minutes without scoring, while Monza finally tightened up after conceding 7 times across their first 2 matches. If neither side scores early, the incentive to protect a valuable point should increase.
A 1-0 result in either direction or a 1-1 draw fits the expected outcome of the match. With Lecce struggling to create clear chances and Monza missing important attacking pieces, Under 2.5 goals offers the strongest value at the current 59¢ Polymarket price.
