Atalanta vs Cagliari Prediction & Preview: Over/Under the Best Betting Angle

Atalanta and Cagliari meet in Bergamo on Saturday with identical six-point tallies through three matches. Atalanta won their opening two Serie A matches before a 2-1 defeat at Roma, while Cagliari have built their start around defensive control, beating Parma and Lecce 1-0 on either side of a 1-0 loss to Inter. Those early patterns make the total-goals market particularly interesting, as both teams look for a third win in four games to begin the Serie A campaign.
Why Our Model Sees Value:
“Cagliari have played three straight Serie A matches with one total goal, while their defensive structure and limited attacking output increase the chance that this develops into a lower-scoring match than the total market suggests.”
A 4% Total Edge
Polymarket currently prices Under 2.5 at 51¢, essentially treating the goal total as a coin flip. My estimate gives the under a 55% chance, creating a 4% model edge. That is enough value to support the prediction at the current price, while 54¢ is the highest level I would consider playable before most of the advantage disappears.
Cagliari's Style Favors the Under
Cagliari's early results drive much of that difference. Fabio Pisacane's side have scored only two goals and conceded one across three Serie A matches. Their latest 1-0 win against Lecce was also stronger defensively than the final score alone indicates. Lecce generated only about 0.5 expected goals, while Cagliari created roughly 1.6 and allowed just 10 shots. A team capable of limiting opponents while remaining selective in attack is naturally attractive for an Under 2.5 prediction.

The clubs start the weekend side by side, with Atalanta eighth and Cagliari ninth on six points after three games. Atalanta have scored four and conceded three, while Cagliari own a 2-1 goal record. A win would keep either club firmly attached to the early European places, even if the season remains young. The importance of this match could help our Atalanta vs Cagliari prediction, as both teams could approach this match with caution to avoid costly mistakes.
Maurizio Sarri's Atalanta opened with a 2-1 victory over Sassuolo and a 1-0 win against Bologna before losing at Roma. The Roma match exposed some concerns despite Atalanta staying ahead until late. Roma produced around 3.4 expected goals, 39 shots and 10 efforts on target, compared with roughly 0.7 expected goals and six shots for Atalanta. Marco Carnesecchi's saves were a major reason the game remained close before Roma scored twice late.
Sarri should expect far more possession against Cagliari, but possession alone may not lead to a high-scoring game. Cagliari have shown a willingness to defend without the ball, protect central areas and wait for transition opportunities.
Cagliari's three league scores tell a clear story: 1-0 against Parma, 0-1 against Inter and 1-0 against Lecce. Pisacane's side have conceded once in 270 league minutes and have already demonstrated that they can remain competitive against Inter without turning the match into an open contest.
Against Lecce, Cagliari had only 42% possession but still produced 20 shots and nine efforts on target while keeping their opponent to three shots on target. Daniel Maldini scored the winner, and the structure behind him allowed Cagliari to protect the advantage rather than chase another goal.
Atalanta are expected to use Sarri's 4-3-3, with Charles De Ketelaere and Gianluca Scamacca central to the attacking plan. Isak Hien and Kamaldeen Sulemana remain unavailable. Cagliari are expected to use a compact 4-3-2-1 featuring Harry Winks in midfield with Jacopo Fazzini and Daniel Maldini supporting the attack. Mattia Felici is sidelined after suffering a serious knee injury, while Yerry Mina has returned to group work.
The main question is whether Atalanta can create clean chances against a Cagliari side that has allowed one league goal all season. Atalanta should control territory, but Cagliari have little reason to turn the game into a high-tempo exchange. With the visitors comfortable defending deeper and Atalanta coming off a match in which their attack produced limited threat, the current 51¢ price does not fully reflect the chance of another defensive Cagliari game. Under 2.5 is our preferred position in this match.
