Manchester United are enormous favorites against Sabah in Thursday's Champions League opener, but there is very little reason for bettors to touch the moneyline at its current price.
The more interesting question is how comfortably United win.
With Manchester United trading around -750 or shorter on the three-way moneyline at U.S. sportsbooks, I'm moving out to the handicap and backing the Red Devils to win by at least three goals.
My Pick: Manchester United -2.5 (-111, FanDuel)
The ATS quantitative prediction for Manchester United vs Sabah has landed on the same bet.
The model gives Manchester United -2.5 a 56% probability, compared with an implied probability of approximately 52.6% at -111, creating a modest but meaningful edge.
My reasoning is slightly different. Rather than relying purely on the numbers, I think the matchup itself gives United a realistic opportunity to turn what should already be a comfortable win into a three- or four-goal margin.
United have hardly started the Premier League season perfectly.
They lost 2-0 at Hull, responded by beating Ipswich 5-2 at Old Trafford and then allowed a late equalizer in Sunday's 2-2 draw at Everton. Four points from three league games is not exactly the start Michael Carrick would have wanted.
But the Ipswich performance is the one that stands out for this bet.
United were able to overwhelm weaker opposition at Old Trafford, and their wider home form remains excellent. They have won nine of their last 10 matches at home across competitions.
Sabah represent another enormous step down in opposition compared with what United normally face domestically.
That does not mean the Azerbaijani champions should simply be dismissed. In fact, Sabah were the highest-scoring team in Champions League qualifying with 18 goals. Veljko Simić led all players with six qualifying goals, while Joy-Lance Mickels scored four.
They also arrive in Manchester after a 5-0 league win over Zira.
The concern is what happens when Sabah have to defend for prolonged periods against an opponent of this quality.
They lost 2-1 away to Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the first leg of their playoff before producing a spectacular 5-2 response at home. Even if Sabah are capable of threatening United going forward, their willingness to play rather than simply sit in a deep block could actually help the -2.5 handicap.
A 4-1 result works just as well as 3-0.
Editor's notes

“Manchester United -2.5 is the better way to play this matchup than laying a huge moneyline price. Sabah have shown they can score, but the gap in quality is significant enough that United should be capable of winning by three or more even if they rotate later in the game.”
Manchester United are overwhelming favorites
The live Polymarket market makes Manchester United roughly 88–89% to win, with Sabah around 7% and the draw near 6%. The matchup is being priced as one of the clearest favorites on the slate.
The handicap market is much closer
Manchester United -2.5 is trading around 53%, which suggests the market expects a comfortable home win, but not a guaranteed rout.
Our projection leans slightly further toward United
At -111, the sportsbook price implies a 52.6% probability. Our projection makes Manchester United -2.5 a 56% play, creating a modest but real edge.

This is the biggest concern with the bet.
United host Manchester City on Sunday, giving Carrick less than 72 hours between the two matches. Carrick himself described the scheduling as "not ideal."
There are also several absences. Carlos Baleba, Matthijs de Ligt, Amad Diallo, Tom Heaton and Manuel Ugarte are ruled out, while Marcus Rashford has been listed as doubtful. Luke Shaw was rested from Wednesday's training session, although Carrick indicated that was a recovery decision rather than a fresh injury.
The important part for this bet is the attack.
UEFA's latest projected lineup still includes Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Šeško, with Kobbie Mainoo and Andrey Santos expected in midfield. Sabah currently have no players listed as injured or doubtful.
The lineup news that comes one hour before the game might tilt slightly the scales. And there may be second-half changes if United establish control, but the expected starting XI is strong enough that I'm comfortable laying the handicap. Until we know the lineup, we have to assume that there will be some rotating considering the opposition and the coming derby.
The Manchester United moneyline is essentially unplayable for me.
United are being priced between roughly -750 and -1000 in the U.S. market, meaning bettors have to risk an enormous amount simply to back the expected winner.
Instead, FanDuel has Manchester United -2.5 at -111 at the latest verified check.
At -111, the wager carries a break-even probability of approximately 52.6%.
That is a considerably more appealing proposition. We are essentially asking whether a Premier League side at Old Trafford can turn one of the biggest talent mismatches of Champions League Matchday 1 into a three-goal victory.
Polymarket provides an interesting confirmation of the sportsbook price.
Manchester United are trading around 88-89% to win the match, illustrating just how one-sided traders believe the matchup is.
More importantly, the Polymarket market for Manchester United -2.5 is around 53%. That's remarkably close to FanDuel's -111 price, which implies 52.6%.
There is no huge market discrepancy to exploit here. Instead, both markets are effectively asking the same question: is a three-goal Manchester United victory slightly more likely than a coin flip? I think it is.
There is enough attacking quality in this Sabah team that I don't necessarily need Manchester United to keep a clean sheet.
That is part of what makes the spread appealing.
United can concede and still cash this bet. A 4-1 or 5-1 win works just as well as 3-0, while Sabah's strong qualifying attack may encourage them to play more expansively than the typical massive Old Trafford underdog.
Rotation before Sunday's Manchester derby is the biggest risk, but the expected presence of Bruno Fernandes, Mbeumo and Šeško gives United more than enough attacking quality to create separation.
Forget the enormous moneyline price. If we're backing Manchester United here, I would rather make them prove the talent gap on the scoreboard.
My pick for the game: Manchester United -2.5 (-111, FanDuel)
