RAMS Park in Istanbul is the setting as Galatasaray host Liverpool in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg. The winner of this tie faces either Paris Saint-Germain or Chelsea in the quarterfinals. These sides already met earlier this season in the league phase, with Galatasaray winning 1-0 at home, and the Turkish giants will be desperate to repeat this trick. Adding extra spice is the news that Galatasaray supporters have been banned from the second leg at Anfield following crowd trouble in Turin, making this first leg a genuine must-win for the home side.
Galatasaray +0.75 Asian Handicap
Confidence: 3 out of 5
Galatasaray arrive in this fixture on the back of 3 consecutive wins across all competitions, including a hard-fought 1-0 Super Lig victory at Besiktas, where Victor Osimhen scored the only goal. In Europe, their campaign has been a real rollercoaster. They finished 20th in the league phase with 10 points, but survived a dramatic playoff against Juventus, winning 7-5 on aggregate after nearly throwing away a 5-2 first-leg lead. Victor Osimhen has been exceptional throughout. He has scored 7 times in European competition this season, and his physical presence and finishing ability make him a constant danger. Liverpool will be well-aware of this, after the Nigerian forward scored the only goal when these teams met back in September.
Leroy Sane is available for this fixture despite a recent domestic red card, as that suspension does not carry over to European competition. However, Galatasaray have several players one yellow card away from suspension, including Osimhen, Davinson Sanchez, and Ugurcan Cakir, which may influence how aggressively they press in the early stages. Metehan Baltaci misses out through suspension, while Enes Buyuk is out with a shoulder injury.
Liverpool qualified for the last 16 directly after finishing 3rd in the league phase with 6 wins from 8 games and 18 points. Arne Slot's side have won 5 of their last 6 matches, scoring multiple goals in 3 of those wins. Their most recent outing was a 3-1 FA Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Mo Salah, Andrew Robertson, and Curtis Jones on the scoresheet.
The Reds average 2.5 goals per game across their last 10 league and Champions League fixtures, with Alexis Mac Allister and Hugo Ekitike leading the scoring charts with 4 each. Alisson Becker has kept 4 clean sheets in that same period, though Liverpool have both scored and conceded in each of their last 3 games across all competitions, suggesting neither side is likely to keep a clean sheet here.
Arne Slot's men will be without Alisson in Turkey after the Brazilian stopper picked up a knock in training. Federico Chiesa will also stay in Liverpool after feeling unwell last night. Liverpool will also be without long-term absentees Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley and Wataru Endo in Istanbul tonight. Curtis Jones will be treading a disciplinary tightrope as he is one yellow card from suspension.
The value in this match does not sit on the Liverpool outright. At -127, you are paying up for a side that has lost 5 of their previous 7 European away games on Turkish soil. The Galatasaray +0.75 Asian Handicap at -112 is far more appealing. That line has been covered in 19 of Galatasaray's last 20 home games, including 8 in a row, meaning your stake is split between a +0.5 and +1.0 line. Any Galatasaray win or draw returns a full payout, and even a narrow Liverpool win by a single goal returns half your stake.
Both Teams to Score is another strong angle. Galatasaray have scored in every single home European game this season, while Liverpool have failed to keep a clean sheet in 3 of their last 5 Champions League outings. Goals at both ends looks the most likely outcome. Over 2.5 goals has also landed in 8 of Galatasaray's last 10 games across all competitions, making the -180 price understandable even if the value is limited there.
Liverpool carry the superior squad depth and their away form in Europe this season has been outstanding. But RAMS Park is one of the tougher away trips in European football, and Galatasaray already showed in this very fixture earlier in the season that they can suppress Liverpool's attack. Osimhen gives them a genuine outlet and Sane's availability significantly improves their creativity.
With the home supporters knowing this may be their only chance to influence the tie given the Anfield ban, expect an electric atmosphere and a game that goes at a high tempo from the first whistle. A 1-1 draw is the most probable single outcome, consistent with the head-to-head history and current defensive trends for both clubs.
Score Projection: Galatasaray 1 – Liverpool 1
Win Probability: Galatasaray 24%, Liverpool 57%, Draw 19%
