Borussia Dortmund look worthy favorites against Villarreal, but the current 54¢ Polymarket price still leaves some room for value. Dortmund have opened the Bundesliga season with back-to-back wins and five goals, while Villarreal arrive in Germany without a victory from their first four La Liga matches. Dortmund’s defensive absences make the -1.5 spread difficult to trust, but their attacking advantage and home edge make the straight win market the stronger play.
Why Our Model Sees Value

“Dortmund's defensive absences make Villarreal dangerous enough that I would avoid laying 1.5 goals, but 54¢ still looks too low for the home moneyline. Villarreal have yet to win in La Liga, have conceded eight goals in four matches and now travel to one of Europe's more difficult away venues. Dortmund's attack should create enough to overcome the defensive risk.”
Dortmund Are Favorites, But Not Overwhelming Ones
The case for the home side starts with current form. Dortmund opened their Bundesliga campaign with a 2-0 home victory over Hamburg before recovering from 2-0 down to beat Hoffenheim 3-2. Serhou Guirassy was central to that comeback, scoring one and assisting another. Dortmund also put five past HEBC Hamburg in the DFB-Pokal between those league fixtures. Villarreal's opening month has gone in the opposite direction. They drew 2-2 with Racing Santander and Atlético Madrid before losing 1-0 at Alavés. Their most recent game produced another setback, a 3-2 home defeat against Deportivo. That leaves Villarreal winless through four La Liga matches, with eight goals conceded. Against a Dortmund attack that has already found its shooting boots, this could prove a recipe for disaster for the Yellow Submarine.
Why I Prefer Dortmund ML to -1.5
There is a case for getting more aggressive. Polymarket offers Dortmund -1.5 at 31¢, meaning a two-goal home victory only needs to occur around 31% of the time to break even. but Dortmund's team news makes the straight moneyline the better trade. Niko Kovač is without Ramy Bensebaini and Nico Schlotterbeck through suspension, while Filippo Mané is sidelined with a thigh injury. Gadou, Waldemar Anton and Daniel Svensson are likely to start for the home side, underlining how different the defensive unit could look. Villarreal, by contrast, have no confirmed absentees, although Juan Foyth is doubtful with an Achilles problem. That defensive imbalance increases the chances Villarreal score, which makes asking Dortmund to win by two considerably less attractive. It does not, however, outweigh Dortmund's attacking advantage and home edge.

Dortmund have started the Bundesliga season with maximum points. Their opening 2-0 win over Hamburg was relatively controlled, with Dortmund establishing their advantage before halftime and seeing out the result despite playing part of the second half with ten men. The 3-2 victory at Hoffenheim was considerably less comfortable.
Dortmund were 2-0 down after 54 minutes and had been second best for much of the opening hour. Guirassy changed the game, scoring in the 61st minute and setting up Fabio Silva five minutes later before a late own goal completed the comeback. That performance showed both sides of Dortmund's current profile. They have enough attacking quality to rescue games from difficult positions, but they can also give opponents opportunities.
If Villarreal are to upset the odds, they will need to exploit the latter.
The Spanish side have scored six times in their opening four league games, so attacking output has not completely disappeared. The problem has been at the other end. Draws against Racing and Atlético were followed by consecutive defeats against Alavés and Deportivo, leaving Villarreal with two points from four games.
Dortmund's defense is the major issue. Schlotterbeck recently returned to individual training after suffering a medial ankle ligament injury at the World Cup, but he is unavailable for this match through suspension.
Further forward, the picture is considerably better. The Dortmund attack built around Serhou Guirassy, with Konstantinos Karetsas and Ethan Nwaneri operating behind him and Jobe Bellingham involved in midfield.
Guirassy is already making an impact this season. His goal and assist against Hoffenheim earned him the Bundesliga's official Man of the Match award.
Villarreal should have most of their first-choice squad available. Gerard Moreno and Georges Mikautadze continue their partnership up front, with Nicolas Pépé and Tajon Buchanan providing width. Defender Foyth is their only listed doubt.
This game may be decided by whether Villarreal can survive Dortmund's first wave of pressure. Signal Iduna Park is one of the few venues where Dortmund can turn relatively ordinary periods of possession into sustained territorial pressure very quickly.
Villarreal's early defensive record suggests that they could succumb to such pressure. They have conceded twice against Racing, twice against Atlético and three times at home against Deportivo. Dortmund should look to attack the spaces around Villarreal's midfield rather than simply circulating possession. Bellingham's ability to carry through midfield and the movement of Nwaneri and Karetsas can create the central overloads that allow Guirassy to remain close to goal.
Guirassy is the obvious focal point. Villarreal cannot afford to allow Dortmund's supporting attackers to draw their center backs away from him because Dortmund have repeatedly demonstrated how effective he can be when isolated inside the box.
But Villarreal should get chances of their own. Dortmund's makeshift defensive structure was vulnerable at Hoffenheim, particularly before their comeback. Mikautadze gives Villarreal a runner capable of attacking the space behind Dortmund, while Gerard Moreno can punish poor positioning around the edge of the box, and that is why Dortmund ML makes more sense than Dortmund -1.5.
The decisive factor should be whether Villarreal can withstand Dortmund's attacking volume for 90 minutes. The Spanish side's start suggests they are capable of contributing to this game offensively. Six goals in four league matches is respectable, but what they have not demonstrated is an ability to control games defensively.
Villarreal have already surrendered eight league goals and arrive in Dortmund less than 72 hours after conceding three at home to Deportivo. Dortmund, meanwhile, scored three times in the final half-hour to overturn a two-goal deficit at Hoffenheim.
There is an additional stylistic concern for Villarreal.Dortmund do not need to dominate every phase to score. Their individual attacking quality means a relatively even match can quickly become a two-goal swing once space opens up.
The defensive absences prevent me from making Dortmund a substantially stronger favorite than the market does. Villarreal possess enough attacking quality to exploit that weakness, and both the 3-1 and 3-2 type of result remain very plausible.
But 54¢ is still short of my 60% projection.
That is enough separation to make Dortmund the best trade on the current Polymarket board without requiring us to take on the additional risk associated with the -1.5 spread.
