Barcelona are overwhelming favorites against Feyenoord in Wednesday’s Champions League opener, but the moneyline is so heavily priced that I see little reason to play it straight.
Instead, I’m backing Barcelona -2.5, which requires Hansi Flick’s side to win by at least three goals.
This is also deliberately different from the ATS Quantitative Model’s approach to the matchup. The model prefers Feyenoord Under 0.5 team goals at +100, but projects a 3-0 Barcelona victory. I’m using that same expected game script and attacking it through the handicap instead.

Barcelona have started the season in a way that makes asking them to win by three goals much less aggressive than it might initially sound.
They are 4-0-0 in La Liga with 17 goals scored and only two conceded. Three of those four victories have been by five goals: 5-0 at Elche, 5-2 against Rayo Vallecano and, most recently, 5-0 away at Valencia. Barcelona have therefore already covered a -2.5 handicap in three of their first four league games.
The attack should also remain close to full strength. UEFA’s projected lineup has Lamine Yamal, Fermín López, Anthony Gordon and Raphinha forming the attacking unit, with Pedri involved behind them. Frenkie de Jong remains out with a knee injury and Eric García is suspended, but no Barcelona players are listed as doubtful.
Barcelona do not need to chase the game or take unusual risks for this bet to work. Their current scoring rate means a normal home performance could be enough.

Feyenoord arrive unbeaten in the Eredivisie at 3-2-0, so this is not simply a case of fading a struggling opponent.
They won 3-1 at NEC on Saturday and have scored 13 goals through five league matches. Gjivai Zechiël has been particularly impressive, scoring his fourth goal of the season against NEC while also providing two assists.
The concern is what has happened when Feyenoord have lost control of matches.
They blew a 2-0 lead against Go Ahead Eagles in a 2-2 draw, with their own match report acknowledging that the visitors created enough late chances for the result to have been even worse. They then conceded twice against ADO Den Haag, another 2-2 draw, after falling 2-0 behind.
That vulnerability is much harder to survive against Barcelona.
Feyenoord also have defensive availability problems. UEFA lists Jordan Bos, Jakub Moder, Bart Nieuwkoop and Gijs Smal as out, while Anis Hadj Moussa is doubtful.
The visitors will want to play rather than simply defend their penalty area — Javi López said this week that Feyenoord intend to impose their own possession-based style despite the difficulty of doing so against Barcelona. That ambition could make them dangerous, but it also increases the possibility of Barcelona finding space once Feyenoord’s first line of pressure is beaten.
The ATS Quantitative Model reaches a similar overall conclusion about the matchup, but through a different betting market.
Its recommended pick is Feyenoord Under 0.5 team goals at +100, assigning the bet a 57% win probability compared with a 50% implied probability. The model gives the play a 7% edge and projects a final score of Barcelona 3-0 Feyenoord.
So let's break it down. If you back the model and it's bet, it will cash with a 1-0 or 2-0 Barcelona win. But my bet of Barcelona -2.5 won't make it through with a result like that. My bet therefore places considerably more responsibility on Barcelona’s attack.
Given what Flick’s team have produced through the opening weeks of the season, I’m comfortable taking that additional requirement.
The market clearly expects a comfortable Barcelona win.
Current sportsbook comparison data has Barcelona -2.5 around -150, although some books have already moved the main handicap to Barcelona -3. By comparison, the Barcelona moneyline is priced around -800 or shorter, offering very little return for simply picking the favorite to win.
Polymarket is closely aligned. Barcelona -2.5 is currently priced at 59¢, compared with 42¢ for Feyenoord +2.5. Barcelona themselves are priced around 90–91¢ to win in regulation.
There is therefore no major disagreement between sportsbooks, prediction-market traders and the ATS model about Barcelona’s superiority. The question is how aggressively to express it.
Feyenoord’s attacking ability gives me some pause, particularly because a consolation goal makes covering three much harder. But their defensive absences and tendency to give opponents chances make this a difficult matchup against a Barcelona side that has already scored five goals three times this season.
The ATS model projects 3-0. I can also see paths through 4-0 or 4-1 if Feyenoord try to stay aggressive after falling behind.
Rather than pay an extreme moneyline price, I’ll ask Barcelona to turn their superiority into a convincing win.
