The Washington Capitals head into Madison Square Garden on Sunday night as they chase a playoff berth, while the New York Rangers look to play spoiler despite sitting outside the postseason picture. Washington has leaned on veteran scoring and steady goaltending to stay alive in the Eastern Conference race, while New York has seen a late surge fueled by young talent and improved offensive output. Here, I break down this matchup in the NHL and give you my Capitals vs Rangers prediction in the betting markets.
Washington enters this contest with a 39-29-9 record and has won 4 of its last 5 games, including a dominant 6-2 victory over Buffalo in its most recent outing. The Capitals have scored 3.14 goals per game this season and are averaging over 3 goals during their current stretch, showing improved scoring depth.
New York, despite being out of playoff contention, has quietly won 4 of its last 5 games as well. A 4-1 win over Detroit highlighted the team’s upside, with rookie Gabe Perreault recording a hat trick. The Rangers sit at 32-36-9 but have been more competitive lately, especially at home.
This matchup features a strong duel in net. Logan Thompson has been a key factor for Washington, posting a .909 save percentage and 2.53 goals-against average along with 28 wins. He is coming off a 37-save performance and has handled a heavy workload down the stretch.
Igor Shesterkin anchors the Rangers with a .912 save percentage and identical 2.53 goals-against average. While his season has been solid, team defense in front of him has been inconsistent, allowing over 3 goals per game.
Washington continues to rely on Alex Ovechkin, who has 31 goals and 61 points, while defenseman Jakob Chychrun has contributed 57 points from the blue line. For New York, Mika Zibanejad leads the way with 33 goals and 72 points. Adam Fox adds playmaking from the back end, while recent production from younger players has provided a boost. However, overall scoring depth for the Rangers remains less consistent compared to Washington.
This game shapes up as one of the tighter contests on the board, reflected in nearly even moneyline pricing. New York has shown life recently and benefits from home ice, but Washington carries more urgency and has been slightly more reliable on both ends of the ice. The Capitals hold an edge in overall team defense and shot generation, which often translates well in close games. The Caps are the more consistent team here and that should translate to a huge road win on Sunday night.
