The Washington Capitals visit the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Saturday with both clubs jockeying for position in the playoff picture and hoping to build late-season confidence. Montreal enters this contest as a slight favorite at home, while Washington brings recent momentum and depth in scoring to a matchup that could come down to goaltending and special teams execution. Here, I break down Capitals vs Canadiens and make my pick in the betting markets.
Pick: Montreal Canadiens Moneyline ATS PRO
Confidence: 4 out of 5
Washington has been playing strong hockey before and after the Olympic break, winning five of their last six games. They most recently beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 and followed that up with a 3-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights, showing balanced scoring and improved defensive play. That surge has the Capitals trending upward and playing with confidence as they chase a playoff spot down the stretch.
Montreal has also been competitive over its last ten games, posting a 6-2-2 record. Their most recent results include a tight loss to the New York Islanders in overtime, but overall the Canadiens have been steady at home and have maintained a solid record in the standings. This consistency has helped propel Montreal into a favorable position and gives them a slight edge as home favorites.
Montreal’s goaltending has been solid, with starter Jakub Dobes carrying a save percentage around .891 and a goals against average near 2.96. Those numbers show he can be beatable at times, but the Canadiens have been effective limiting high-danger chances and giving their offense a chance to support him.
On the road side, Washington’s recent goaltending has been respectable with quality saves in big moments against elite teams. Logan Thompson has been better than Dobes this season, but that hasn't necessarily translated to more wins.
For Washington, Tom Wilson leads the offense with 49 points, including 23 goals. His scoring and physical presence make him a constant threat, and the Capitals have depth scoring that has shown up all season. Pierre-Luc Dubois has also been a catalyst recently, providing multi-point efforts that have helped spur Washington’s recent wins.
Montreal counters with Nick Suzuki pacing the team with 65 points and Cole Caufield leading the goal-scoring charge with 33 tallies. The Canadiens’ top forwards have been productive and able to create offense in different situations, particularly at 5-on-5, where they generate quality scoring chances.
Score Projection: Montreal Canadiens 4 – Washington Capitals 3 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Montreal Canadiens 56%, Washington Capitals 44% ATS PRO
This contest features two competitive Eastern Conference teams with different strengths that make this a game worth watching. While Washington’s recent surge makes them dangerous, Montreal’s home record and offensive balance give the Canadiens a small but meaningful advantage. Expect a close game with Montreal edging out Washington in a one-goal decision, with the Habs being my best bet in this one.
