Key Storylines

There are a couple of important items at stake going into this contest. First, both teams are looking for momentum heading into their respective Olympic breaks. But more importantly, these teams are looking for crucial points to help their playoff chances. Pittsburgh enters this game in second place in the Metropolitan Division, while Buffalo is fourth in the Atlantic. A win here would be huge for either team going into the break.

Recent form

Pittsburgh has dropped two straight games going into this contest and will try to end that streak before the Olympic break.
Buffalo has dropped two of its last three games and is coming off an overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Goaltending

Pittsburgh’s team defense has rounded into shape, allowing 2.91 goals per game with an 84.2% penalty kill. Stuart Skinner has made the bulk of recent starts and gives them league-average shot-stopping with playoff experience.
Buffalo’s Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is sidelined with a lower-body issue leading into the Olympic break, so the crease will be occupied by Colten Ellis in this contest.

Key skaters

Sidney Crosby remains the driver for Pittsburgh with 27 goals, 32 assists, and 59 points. His line has been creating high-danger looks consistently.
Tage Thompson headlines Buffalo with 29 goals, 29 assists, 58 points. Add Rasmus Dahlin’s playmaking from the blue line and Alex Tuch’s recent finishing, and Buffalo’s top unit is a handful at home.

Betting Trends & H2H

Pittsburgh defeated Buffalo 4-2 in Pittsburgh in the first meeting between these teams this season.
The Pens are 15-7-5 on the road this season.
The Sabres are 17-7-3 on home ice this year.

Penguins vs Sabres Model Projection

Score Projection: Pittsburgh 3 – Buffalo 4

Win Probability: Pittsburgh 46%, Buffalo 54%

Final Thoughts

I'm going with the Sabres to win this contest on home ice. Both of these teams have slowed down a bit going into the Olympic break, but the Sabres have an elite track record at home and should be able to get the job done despite all of the firepower on Pittsburgh's side.
