The Philadelphia Flyers will travel to PPG Paints Arena on Thursday to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in a heated Metropolitan Division matchup. Both of these in-state rivals enter this contest with similar records and point totals, making it a crucial game for positioning in the playoff hunt. The Penguins enter as favorites on the moneyline, while the Flyers are reeling from a tough defeat the previous night. Here, I've broken down all the action and you can find my Flyers vs Penguins prediction below.
Pick: | Penguins ML ATS PRO |
Confidence: | 5/5 |
The Flyers have struggled of late, most recently losing 5-2 to the Buffalo Sabres. That was their fourth straight loss. Philadelphia’s offense can still be dangerous behind players like Trevor Zegras and Owen Tippett, but inconsistent outputs and recent defensive lapses have hampered their momentum.
The Penguins were beaten 2-1 by the Tampa Bay Lightning in a shootout last time out, which was their third loss in a row. Both teams have had poor results in their last few games, but Pittsburgh’s recent metrics still suggest a slight advantage in shots and scoring ability compared to Philadelphia.
The goaltending matchup could be pivotal to the outcome of this game. The Flyers have rotated netminders, and recent struggles include Dan Vladar being pulled after early goals against Buffalo. Samuel Ersson may get the nod, but Philadelphia’s save percentages have been shaky in recent contests. Pittsburgh’s crease situation appears more stable, with Arturs Silovs posting strong metrics over a string of starts and providing the Penguins with a reliable last line of defense.
Sidney Crosby continues to carry the Penguins offensively, leading his club in overall point production. His matchup history against the Flyers is historically dominant, making him an attractive prop bet for goal and point props. Rickard Rakell and Evgeni Malkin also provide secondary scoring punch for Pittsburgh. For Philadelphia, Zegras has been productive, but the Flyers’ depth has been inconsistent. Konecny remains a key contributor, but his impact will be tempered if offensive support fails to materialize consistently.
Score Projection: Pittsburgh 4 – Philadelphia 2 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Pittsburgh 58%, Philadelphia 42% ATS PRO
The Pittsburgh Penguins are my pick to come away with a win on the ice on Thursday night. Pittsburgh has a significant rest advantage going into this game, as they take on a struggling Flyers team that is on the second leg of a back-to-back. Expect the Pens to take advantage of the tired legs of the Flyers and for Pittsburgh to be the team to snap its losing streak tonight.
