The Los Angeles Kings head north to face the Calgary Flames on Thursday night in a late-season Western Conference clash that carries very different stakes for each side. Los Angeles enters the game pushing to sharpen its form ahead of the postseason, with a chance to move up in the Pacific Division standings as well. Calgary is playing out the string after falling out of contention. Here, I break down this Kings vs Flames matchup and make my prediction on the final night of the NHL regular season.
The Kings come into this contest in strong shape, posting a 7-1-2 record over their last 10 games and winning 4 of their last 5. Their offense has found rhythm late in the season, which has helped them qualify for the playoffs. By contrast, Calgary has gone 3-5-2 in its last 10 and has dropped 4 of its last 5 games. Defensive lapses have been a major issue, with the Flames allowing 36 goals over that 10-game stretch.
Los Angeles is expected to lean on Darcy Kuemper, who has delivered a 2.78 goals-against average with a save percentage of .891. While not elite, he has been steady behind a structured defensive system. Calgary counters with Dustin Wolf, who has shown flashes with a .899 save percentage but has also been exposed by high shot volumes and inconsistent team defense. The goaltending edge slightly favors Los Angeles due to the support system in front of Kuemper.
Adrian Kempe continues to lead the Kings offensively with over 70 points and 30-plus goals, serving as the focal point of a balanced attack. Los Angeles also benefits from contributions across its forward lines, making it difficult to key in on one scorer. For Calgary, Matt Coronato leads the way with 40-plus points, but the drop-off after him has been noticeable. The Flames have struggled to generate sustained pressure, especially against structured defensive teams.
Expect a competitive game early, especially with Calgary playing at home, but Los Angeles should gradually take control through superior depth and execution. If the Kings reach 3 goals, their track record suggests they are highly likely to finish the job. With playoff positioning still on the line for Los Angeles and Calgary trending downward, backing the Kings on the puckline offers value in what projects as a close but controlled road win.
