The men’s ice hockey qualification playoffs at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan‑Cortina includes a matchup between France and Germany on Tuesday. France enters this elimination game having lost all three of its group stage contests, including a 10‑2 defeat to Canada and a 6‑3 loss to the Czech Republic. Germany’s preliminary round produced mixed results as well, with a solid 3‑1 win over Denmark offset by setbacks versus Latvia and the United States. Germany is a heavy favorite going into this game. Below, I break it all down and give you my France vs Germany prediction.
Pick: Germany -2.5 goals ATS PRO
Confidence: ★★★★☆
France’s group stage performance was challenging, finishing 0‑3 with a large negative goal differential. They conceded 20 goals in three matches, including a 10‑2 loss against Canada and a 4‑0 shutout by Switzerland. Their presence in the qualification playoffs casts doubt on the legitimacy of this round of the tournament, as I'd argue that the top eight teams should have just moved into the quarterfinals.
Germany went 1‑2, scoring a decisive 3‑1 victory over Denmark but suffering defeats to Latvia (4‑3) and the United States (5‑1). Germany struggled to put together consistent performances in the group stage, but they still have a huge advantage going into this quarterfinal contest.
France’s goaltending has been beset by defensive breakdowns, resulting in high shot volumes and goals allowed every night of the preliminary round. Their netminders have struggled to contain the competition in this tournament. Meanwhile, Germany has NHL veteran Philipp Grubauer, who is capable of making key saves and stabilizing the back end. Grubauer’s experience against elite competition should be a key asset in keeping France off the board early, particularly if Germany controls possession of the puck.
Germany’s offense is headlined by Tim Stutzle, who leads his team in goals at the Olympic tournament thus far and projects to be a central figure in this matchup. Leon Draisaitl provides a dynamic presence up front, and Moritz Seider anchors the defense. France’s primary offensive hope is Alexandre Texier, their lone NHL contributor, whose production could make a difference if he finds room to operate. Yet the depth for France beyond Texier is limited compared to Germany’s roster.
Score Projection: France 1 – Germany 5 ATS PRO
Win Probability: France 15%, Germany 85% ATS PRO
Germany should control this contest from start to finish against a French team that should already be eliminated from Olympic competition. The French are just overmatched in every conceivable way at this point in time. I'm going to lay the puckline with Germany here, as they will advance to the quarterfinals by virtue of simply not being as bad as France is.
