Battle for the Wild Card: Boston Bruins vs Washington Capitals Prediction

Updated March 13, 2026
The race for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference reaches a critical point this Saturday as the Boston Bruins travel to face the Washington Capitals. Both teams are locked in a high stakes battle as the regular season enters its final month. Boston currently occupies a wild card spot with 78 points but they are feeling the pressure from a chasing pack that includes these very Capitals. Washington sits just five points back and views this home game as a mandatory opportunity to gain ground. This contest is the second time in seven days that these rivals have met after the Bruins took a 3-1 victory in their previous meeting. Washington is looking to build on their recent 2-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres which showed their ability to shut down high powered offenses. Meanwhile the Bruins must prove they can win away from their home ice where they have struggled with a losing record of 11 wins and 14 losses this season. Team | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
|---|---|---|---|

Washington Capitals | +1.5 at -225 | +120 | Under 6.0 at -110 |
This game is highly interesting based on the standings. Washington isn't completely out of the playoff race just yet (73), and they are chasing the Wild card spot where Bruins currently sit (78). Neither team can "afford" to lose this as Boston have the Blue Jackets (77) breathing down their neck, chasing that very Wild card spot. Additionally, Boston has some tough competition in the Atlantic division where strong teams like Buffalo, Tampa Bay and Montreal have taken up the divisional playoff spots.
>Washington is coming from a strong victory against one of the hottest teams in the league right now, the aforementioned Sabres, and is supported by strong goaltending from Logan Thompson, with backup Charlie Lindgren stepping up in the win against Buffalo. For the Bruins the focus is on rediscovering their consistency on the road. They are coming off a 4-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks which was a rare letdown for a team that usually dominates at home (they were undefeated at home since the start of 2026) David Pastrnak is the engine of the Boston offense with 76 points including 23 goals and 53 assists. A major surprise for the Bruins this year has been Morgan Geekie who has exploded for 34 goals. The Bruins possess the fifth best power play in the league at 25.4% and they will look to exploit a Washington penalty kill that has shown signs of weakness recently. The battle in the crease will likely feature Jeremy Swayman who has 25 wins and a 2.76 goals against average as he continues to be one of the most reliable starters in the league.
Boston has had the upper hand in recent history winning four of the last five meetings between these two franchises. Their most recent encounter on March 7 ended in a 3-1 Bruins victory where they limited Washington to only 19 shots on goal. However the Capitals are much more effective at Capital One Arena where they boast a record of 20 wins and only 11 losses. Boston has been a poor bet on the road this year covering the spread in only 12 of their 30 away games. The under has been a frequent winner when these teams meet as it has hit in seven of their last 10 games. Washington is 32-34 against the spread this season while the Bruins are 36-28. Both teams have seen the total go under in 55% of their games this year. Player | Prop |
|---|---|
David Pastrnak | Over 3.5 Shots on Goal |
Alex Ovechkin | Anytime Goal Scorer |
Morgan Geekie | Over 0.5 Points |
Score Projection: Boston Bruins 4 - Washington Capitals 2 Pick: Boston Bruins Moneyline -140 Confidence: 4 out of 5 Win Probability: Boston Bruins 58%, Washington Capitals 42% The Bruins are the superior team on paper and possess significantly more scoring depth. While their road record is a concern they are desperate to secure their playoff spot and cannot afford to drop points to a team chasing them. The Capitals will likely struggle to contain the high volume of shots that Pastrnak and Geekie generate. Boston should be able to control the flow of the game and capitalize on their power play chances. Both teams have strong goaltenders but Jeremy Swayman should be held in higher regard in this matchup. Betting on the Bruins moneyline is the preferred play here as the value is reasonable for a team with their talent. The Capitals are a gritty group but they lack the offensive weapons to keep pace if Boston starts to find the net early, I also expect the Bruins to cover the spread if an empty net goal is scored late in the third period. Expect a professional performance from the Bruins as they move one step closer to locking up their postseason berth. The drive to stay ahead in the standings will be the primary motivator for a Boston team that knows how to win important games in March.Affiliate DisclosureATS.io uses affiliate links.
