San Francisco and Los Angeles open their 2026 season Thursday night at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia. Both clubs finished 12-5 last season and both lost to the same playoff opponent. The 49ers were eliminated 41-6 by Seattle, while the Rams advanced to the NFC Championship Game before also falling to the eventual champion Seahawks.
Los Angeles enters as the stronger team on paper after adding Myles Garrett and bringing Aaron Donald out of retirement, yet San Francisco’s early arrival in Melbourne creates an unusual variable that makes the underdog more than capable of winning this matchup.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Los Angeles has the deeper roster and deserves to be favored, but the current price does not give enough weight to San Francisco’s preparation advantage in Australia, the familiarity between these division rivals, and the 49ers’ ability to keep recent meetings competitive.”
Rams Priced As Favorites Down Under
Polymarket currently prices the Rams at 66¢ to win outright and San Francisco at 35¢. The spread market is considerably tighter, with 49ers +3.5 trading at 51¢ and Rams -3.5 at 50¢. The 48.5-point total is almost evenly divided as well, with the Under at 52¢ and Over at 49¢.
Can LA Win By Enough?
My model agrees that Los Angeles should win more often than San Francisco, but that is different from laying 3.5 points. I make the 49ers +3.5 position 55% likely to pay, producing a 4% edge over its 51% market probability. San Francisco arrived in Melbourne roughly a week before the game and has been practicing in the morning to prepare for the local 10:35 a.m. kickoff. Los Angeles is taking the opposite approach and plans to arrive roughly 24 hours before the game while attempting to stay close to its West Coast body clock. There is uncertainty in both strategies, but getting 3.5 points makes San Francisco’s preparation edge more valuable.

There is no easing into the season for either club. San Francisco and Los Angeles went 12-5 in 2025 in an NFC West that also produced eventual champion Seattle. Starting 1-0 while putting a division rival at 0-1 carries extra value in what could again be one of the NFL’s tightest races.
The teams split their 2025 meetings. San Francisco won 26-23 in overtime at SoFi Stadium despite being outgained 456-407. Los Angeles answered with a 42-26 victory in San Francisco, when Matthew Stafford threw for 280 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Stafford enters 2026 after a remarkable season. He threw for 4,707 yards, 46 touchdowns, and only 8 interceptions, posting a 109.2 passer rating. Puka Nacua caught 129 passes for 1,715 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Kyren Williams rushed for 1,252 yards at 4.8 yards per attempt. Nacua and starting left tackle Alaric Jackson are both expected to play Thursday.
That puts pressure on a San Francisco defensive front that is less than fully settled. Sam Okuayinonu is on injured reserve with a broken foot, and Nick Bosa has been carefully managed while returning from his ACL injury. Bosa did not take part in the media-visible portion of Monday’s practice, although he has indicated he expects to play.
The matchup between the Niners' offensive line and Rams' defensive front may be the defining matchup of this game. The Rams added Garrett and have named Donald a starter following his return from retirement. Donald already owns 12.5 sacks in 18 regular-season games against San Francisco, while Garrett gives Sean McVay another elite pass rusher to deploy against Brock Purdy.
San Francisco still has ways to slow that rush. Christian McCaffrey produced 1,202 rushing yards and 924 receiving yards last season, giving Kyle Shanahan an outlet who can punish pressure with screens, quick throws and outside runs. George Kittle also returned to practice Monday as he works back from his Achilles injury.
Los Angeles has enough high-end talent to justify being favorites in the market, especially with Stafford directing an offense that was exceptional throughout 2025. The question is whether the Rams can create separation after their extreme travel schedule. San Francisco has already demonstrated it can play Los Angeles close, and 3.5 points provides protection in a game where familiarity and preparation could keep the margin slim.
The Rams are my pick to win outright, but 49ers +3.5 is the stronger prediction at the current 51¢ price. A Los Angeles victory by 1 to 3 points is a very realistic outcome, and we will take the points with the Niners with that in mind.
