Denver and Kansas City open their 2026 seasons with an AFC West game that carries far more weight than the average Week 1 matchup. The Broncos swept the Chiefs last season on the way to a 14-3 record, while Kansas City finished 6-11 after losing its final six games. Patrick Mahomes is expected to return after the ACL and LCL injuries that ended his 2025 season, giving Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium a comeback story worth watching in addition to the AFC West implications for this matchup..
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Denver’s 2025 record and season sweep of Kansas City are factored into the price, while the price appears too cautious about the difference Mahomes can make in Kansas City’s offense. The Chiefs still allowed only 19.3 points per game last season despite finishing 6-11, and home-field advantage combined with a healthy enough Mahomes gives Kansas City a better chance to create separation than the current spread price implies.”
KC Favored At Polymarket
Polymarket currently prices Kansas City -2.5 at 51¢, while Denver +2.5 is available at 50¢. The outright market is more confident in Kansas City, with the Chiefs priced around 57¢ to win and Denver around 44¢. That difference is important. The market sees Kansas City as the more likely winner, but it is much less certain the Chiefs can clear a field-goal-sized margin.
Our Model Favors KC By 3+ Points
My projection puts Kansas City -2.5 at 54.5%, a 3.5% edge over the 51% implied probability. The appeal comes from the matchup rather than simply backing Mahomes because of his reputation. Kansas City remained a strong defensive team in 2025, ranking sixth in points allowed at 19.3 per game. If Mahomes restores even part of the Chiefs’ usual efficiency on offense, Kansas City does not need a major scoring jump to turn last season’s close losses into wins.

Mahomes’ first regular-season appearance since his knee injury is the key to this game and to our Broncos vs Chiefs predictions. He completed 62.8% of his passes for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions across 14 games last season. He also rushed for 422 yards and five scores, showing how much his movement added before the injury. Kansas City kept him out of preseason action as a precaution, and Andy Reid has indicated Mahomes is expected to start barring a late setback.
Denver’s defense should immediately test how comfortable Mahomes is moving inside and outside the pocket. Kansas City also has uncertainty at left tackle, where Josh Simmons has been dealing with a back issue. If protection breaks down, Denver has a path to keep the game tight without needing to score much.
Bo Nix enters his third season after starting all 17 games during Denver’s 14-3 campaign. He completed 63.4% of his passes for 3,931 yards with 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while adding 356 rushing yards and five scores. Denver also converted 41.2% of its third downs last season, giving Sean Payton an offense capable of sustaining drives even without relying on explosive plays.
Kansas City’s defense remains the reason I am willing to give the Chiefs more than a 50% chance of covering. The Chiefs allowed 19.3 points per game last year despite an offense that often left them little margin for error. Steve Spagnuolo can pressure Nix with disguised fronts and force him to identify coverage quickly after the snap, especially with crowd noise at Arrowhead Stadium playing a role.
Denver won both meetings with the Chiefs last season, taking the first 22-19 before winning 20-13 at Arrowhead on Christmas Day. The second result deserves some additional context because Mahomes did not play. Still, sweeping a division rival is always significant, and Denver enters 2026 knowing it can win this matchup in Kansas City.
That recent history is one reason the Polymarket spread remains close. Denver was the better team across the full 2025 regular season, but Kansas City’s 6-11 finish was worse than its defensive performance deserved in the standings.
The deciding factor should be Kansas City’s offensive efficiency around Mahomes. Denver is good enough defensively to expose any rust, and Mahomes may be less willing to extend plays with his legs in his first game back. Kansas City does not need vintage Mahomes for the prediction to work, though. A cleaner offensive performance paired with a defense that ranked near the top of the league in scoring prevention could be enough for them to win by at least a field goal at home.
